In the heart of Derry city, plans are underway for the redevelopment of the iconic Austins department store, a beloved landmark that has been closed since 2016. This project aims to breathe new life into the site, with construction expected to begin in 2026 and hopes that the doors could reopen within approximately 18 months thereafter.
Austins is celebrated as one of the oldest department stores globally, initially established by Thomas Austin in 1830 as a simple draper shop on Bishop Street. The current building has been a prominent feature of the Diamond since its construction in 1907, replacing an earlier structure lost to a catastrophic fire.
Funding and restoration efforts
In March of this year, the Inner City Trust (ICT), a non-profit organization, received a £1.2 million grant from the Department for Communities (DfC). This funding will facilitate the purchase and restoration of the historic site.
Additionally, the project has secured nearly £460,000 from the National Lottery Fund, with the potential for an additional £4.47 million in further support.
Local architect Karl Pedersen, a partner at Mullarkey Pedersen, expressed optimism about the timeline. The team is currently focused on understanding the building’s unique characteristics and potential. “Our recent efforts have been dedicated to assessing the structure, identifying challenges, and more importantly, uncovering opportunities for enhancement,” he noted. “It’s crucial to lay a solid foundation at this stage, as it will significantly influence the overall success of the revitalization.”
Looking ahead to construction
While an exact start date for construction has yet to be determined, Pedersen is hopeful that contractors will be on-site by 2026. Once construction begins, the anticipated timeline suggests that the building could welcome visitors again within approximately 18 months. However, the specific purpose of the redeveloped space remains under consideration.
“The community has a deep-seated affection for this building,” Pedersen remarked. “Everyone you meet seems to have a story or a cherished memory related to Austins. Our vision includes creating a space that is welcoming and connects with the street, reversing the trend of closed-off windows that characterized its operation as a department store.”
Preserving the building’s legacy
In addition to the exterior’s historic charm, the interior of the five-story Edwardian structure is rich in local heritage, with several features likely to be preserved. Pedersen noted that one of the most frequently mentioned aspects of Austins is the distinctive wobbly staircase. Furthermore, the rooftop restaurant—although not technically on the rooftop—offered spectacular views of the River Foyle and the surrounding city, creating a unique dining experience.
“We are committed to capturing that essence and creating a similar atmosphere in the future,” Pedersen stated. “The goal is to provide a vibrant food experience that resonates with both residents and visitors alike.”
Ensuring sustainability
As the project moves forward, ensuring sustainable future use of the building is essential. Pedersen emphasized the importance of creating a space that can maintain its operations independently after contractors complete their work. “Our objective is to create a space that can thrive in the long term, supporting the community and its needs,” he explained.
The redevelopment of Austins represents more than just a construction project; it is a chance to revitalize a significant part of Derry’s cultural landscape. With community support and a clear vision, the restoration of this historic landmark is set to become a vibrant hub that honors its past while looking forward to the future.
