Historic win for Ellen Walshe
At 24 years old, Walshe has achieved her first senior international victory by winning a gold medal, marking a significant milestone a decade after her debut international medal, which was a silver at the European Youth Olympic Festival.
In reflecting on this achievement, she emphasized the importance of celebrating such moments, stating, “I think you got to enjoy these moments because they don’t come very often.”
A race to remember
Walshe’s strategy during the race played a crucial role in her success. “It was a stacked field of fliers,” she noted, underscoring the intense competition she faced. Her plan focused on conserving energy for the final stretch, allowing her to launch a powerful sprint in the last 50 meters. “You just have to hold on for the first 150m and then just try to bring it home the last 50, and that’s just what I did; I just kicked like hell.”
Walshe demonstrated remarkable resilience as she overcame initial challenges, with her dedication to training ultimately yielding positive results. “You have to stick to your own process, which is so important to not race anyone else’s race,” she stated. Reflecting on her previous performance, she acknowledged, “I know the back end can be strong, the front end, it’s definitely a weakness that I have, I need to get out quicker.”
Team Ireland’s success at the championships
Walshe’s gold medal victory contributes to a significant achievement for the Irish swimming team at the European Championships. In addition to her gold, she earned a silver medal in the 200m individual medley shortly before, highlighting her adaptability and proficiency in various swimming styles. Following her success in the butterfly event, Walshe competed in the 400m individual medley, where she finished in seventh place.
The championship has been a significant success for Ireland, culminating in a total of seven medals, including three golds. The Irish swimmers have not only achieved impressive medal counts but have also established nineteen Irish records, which include twelve senior and seven junior records. This success points to a promising future for Irish swimming as athletes continue to push boundaries and achieve personal bests. Walshe highlighted the team’s collective spirit and energy, underscoring the necessity of mutual support throughout the challenges of competition.
