The Filante, weighing just 1,000 kg, is built using 3D-printed components and operates on a robust 87kWh battery similar to that found in the Scenic E-Tech electric SUV. This combination of lightweight materials and sophisticated engineering significantly contributes to its impressive performance.

A world record achievement

Renault’s achievement was highlighted during a test drive around the UTAC track in Morocco, where the Filante covered an astonishing distance of 626 miles in under 10 hours. This accomplishment included necessary technical stops and driver changes, showcasing the vehicle’s efficiency and reliability in real-world conditions.

During the record-setting drive, the Filante maintained an average speed exceeding 68 mph while achieving a remarkable electricity consumption rate of 7.9 miles per kilowatt. This translates to a practical range of over 687 miles on a single charge, marking a significant milestone in electric mobility.

Battery performance and potential

After nearly ten hours on the road, the Filante still had 11 percent battery charge remaining, enough for an additional 74 miles at a steady speed of 62 mph. This outstanding battery performance exemplifies Renault’s commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology and enhancing the driving experience.

Olivier Blanche, the project manager for the Filante, emphasized the passion and dedication behind this project. He stated, “This venture stemmed from a relentless pursuit: to achieve unparalleled efficiency. We faced challenges from weather conditions to aerodynamics, but what truly stood out was the collaborative spirit—a motivating collective endeavor driven by the commitment of Renault teams and our partners.”

Future prospects and production plans

Despite the impressive capabilities of the Filante, Renault has no current plans to bring this innovative concept car to mass production. The vehicle serves primarily as a showcase of Renault’s technological advancements and a glimpse into the potential future of electric vehicles.

In addition to the Filante, Renault is exploring the production of another exciting concept, the Renault 4 Savane 4×4. Fabrice Cambolive, the CEO of Renault, expressed eagerness to push for the production of this four-wheel-drive model, particularly in Northern European markets where all-wheel drive is increasingly sought after.

The Renault 4 is set to join the lineup as part of a series of retro-inspired electric vehicles, following in the footsteps of the Renault 5 and paving the way for the upcoming Renault Twingo. These models reflect a blend of nostalgia and modern technology, appealing to consumers seeking charm and practicality in electric vehicles.

While discussing the retro design approach, Cambolive noted, “Although we appreciate the emotional connection that retro designs bring, it is not a strict guideline for our future offerings. Our forthcoming models will embrace forward-thinking designs while drawing upon a rich heritage of over 125 years.”
