Gustavo Petro’s journey: A former rebel leading Colombia towards change

Gustavo Petro's journey from a rebel fighter to Colombia's president reflects his commitment to social justice and environmentalism.

In 2007, during a visit to Washington, DC, Gustavo Petro, a prominent figure in the Colombian Senate, made a request that highlighted the stark differences between his life and that of his American hosts. He asked to join a friend of his host, Sanho Tree, on a school pickup run.

At the time, Petro was in the U.S. to receive the prestigious Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Award for his efforts in unveiling the connections between politicians and paramilitary organizations. He remarked, “That’s something I can’t do in Colombia,” indicating the grave dangers he faced back home.

Petro’s fears were rooted in his past as a member of the M-19, a guerrilla group that aimed for a more just and equitable Colombia. After laying down his arms, he transitioned into a political role, becoming a senator known for his whistleblowing on the collusion of politicians with paramilitary forces, drawing the ire of powerful adversaries.

The evolution of a political leader

Petro’s political journey is marked by a steadfast commitment to issues that have plagued Colombia for decades, such as land reform and social equity. According to Alejandro Gaviria, a former minister of education under Petro, his ideas have remained remarkably consistent over the years. “If you watch an interview of his 20 years ago, he has exactly the same ideas,” Gaviria noted, emphasizing Petro’s early advocacy for peace and environmental concerns, which were often ahead of his time.

Childhood influences and early activism

Born in 1960 in the coastal town of Cienaga de Oro, Petro grew up in a middle-class family. His childhood was marked by a quest for knowledge and a questioning of authority. His father, an educator, instilled in him a love for reading, notably through One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This novel, rich in themes of Colombia’s social struggles, deeply influenced Petro’s worldview.

Petro’s mother, Clara Nubia Urrego, shared stories of Colombia’s turbulent history, including the assassination of the reformist leader Jorge Eliecer Gaitan in 1948, which sparked a decade of violence known as La Violencia. These narratives shaped Petro’s understanding of social injustice and fueled his desire to fight against the systemic inequalities prevalent in Colombian society.

From rebellion to governance

In 1978, while studying economics in Bogota, Petro became involved with the M-19, a group that diverged from traditional guerrilla movements by emphasizing urban activism. They aimed for a democratic society rather than a Marxist revolution. Petro’s contributions included disseminating propaganda rather than participating directly in armed conflict. His role as a political activist led to significant community initiatives, such as mobilizing impoverished families to establish housing projects.

The turning point

The mid-1980s brought a crucial turning point for Petro as peace negotiations between the M-19 and the Colombian government began to take shape. In a significant demonstration, he publicly acknowledged his involvement with the group, stating, “From then on, my life changed. My youth was over.” However, this declaration also invited scrutiny and danger, as the peace talks soon collapsed, forcing Petro back into hiding.

During this time, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening through a shamanic encounter, which deepened his commitment to environmental stewardship and social justice. His visions revealed his interconnectedness with nature and the urgent need to protect it, shaping his future political agenda.

A new era for Colombia

Fast forward to, Petro emerged victorious in the presidential election, becoming the first leftist leader of Colombia. His administration has been marked by ambitious promises to address social inequality and environmental degradation. On the international stage, Petro distinguished himself as a vocal critic of former U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly regarding the U.S. approach to Latin American politics.

Despite facing substantial challenges in implementing his vision, Petro remains determined to guide Colombia toward a fairer and more sustainable future. The struggles he faced as a rebel, a senator, and now as president reflect his enduring commitment to the Colombian people and their pursuit of justice.
