The collision occurred on Saturday when a Volkswagen Passat, which had been pursued by police, crashed into a marked armed response car on the A66 near Middlesbrough. The Passat’s occupants, Michael Robert Cahill, Jacob Matusiak, Theo Rae, Makai Saddington, and Cole Robert Worthy, also perished in the crash.
The heroes remembered
PC Tom Clough, 38, and PC Matthew Blades, 37, were hailed as heroes by their families and colleagues. PC Clough’s family described him as a man with a fantastic sense of humour and a willingness to help anyone.
They remembered him as their hero always ready to jump into action whenever needed. PC Clough had proudly served his country and was dedicated to public duty throughout his life.
PC Blades’ wife shared her profound grief, describing him as loved beyond words and the most devoted father to their two young sons. Community tributes
Tributes from various communities where the officers were involved painted a picture of their impactful lives. Seaton Carew FC, where PC Blades had recently become a coach, remembered him and his family as much loved members of the club. FC Hartlepool, where he coached the under-10s team, described him as a role model, mentor, and friend whom the children admired.
Carmel College in Darlington, where PC Blades taught English before joining the police, remembered him as an intelligent, kind, and approachable teacher who gave generously of himself to his students. A man who knew PC Clough posted on social media, calling him a true friend, fantastic soldier, and an even better police officer.
Investigation and aftermath
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the crash. Initial accounts from officers involved in the pursuit, incident logs, and in-car footage have been obtained. The IOPC recognized the devastating impact of the crash on Cleveland Police and the wider policing community.
On Monday morning, more than £235,000 had been pledged for the officers’ families in an online fundraiser set up by the Cleveland Police Federation. The federation stated that the two officers had paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and pledged to support the families at this unfathomable moment.
A section of the A66 in South Bank between Eston Road and Normanby Road remained closed until later on Monday while repairs were carried out on the carriageway. The community continues to grieve and support the families of the fallen officers.
