VodafoneThree has unveiled SuperMobile, a new 5G service promising up to four times faster speeds and guaranteed minimum speeds of 15 megabits per second.
In a significant move to enhance mobile connectivity in the UK, VodafoneThree has launched its new SuperMobile service. This upgraded 5G offering promises speeds up to four times faster than standard plans, addressing the country’s lackluster mobile internet service.
The service is a direct result of the £15 billion merger between Vodafone and Three, completed last year.
The UK has long struggled with mobile internet speeds and coverage, ranking at the bottom among G7 nations. VodafoneThree’s SuperMobile aims to change this narrative by providing a more reliable and faster network experience.
The service is powered by advanced technology known as “slicing,” which allows different parts of the mobile network to be used for different purposes, ensuring optimal performance.
SuperMobile: Faster speeds and guaranteed performance
SuperMobile offers guaranteed minimum speeds of 15 megabits per second, making it the first of its kind in the industry.
This speed is sufficient for streaming high-definition video without interruptions. VodafoneThree has also assured customers that they can leave their contract early without penalty if the service falls short of expectations.
To access the improved service, Vodafone contract customers will need to pay an additional fee. The cost varies depending on the plan: £3 per month more than Vodafone full-speed Xtra plans, £8 more on SIM-only 100Mbps plans, £4 more on handset 100mbps plans, or £12 as a rolling monthly add-on. This premium pricing reflects the enhanced performance and reliability of the SuperMobile service.
Max Taylor on the future of connectivity
Max Taylor, CEO of VodafoneThree, emphasized the significance of the merger and the new SuperMobile service. “Vodafone SuperMobile is tangible evidence of what the Vodafone and Three merger makes possible: better connectivity and real choice for customers,” he stated. Taylor highlighted the company’s £11 billion investment in building a faster, higher-quality network, positioning VodafoneThree as a leader in the UK’s connectivity landscape.
“The UK needs to go faster, and with the country’s largest, best spectrum holding, and our £11 billion investment we will build a faster, higher-quality network than anyone else,” Taylor added. He described SuperMobile as super-fast, super-reliable, and super-secure ideal for consumers watching content on-the-go, utilizing AI applications, or businesses undergoing digital transformation.
Vodafone TV: A new entertainment hub
In addition to SuperMobile, VodafoneThree announced the launch of Vodafone TV, an entertainment hub that brings together streaming, live TV, gaming, and apps in one place. This service will be available from October to new and existing Vodafone customers with a home broadband, 5G Broadband, or mobile plan. Vodafone TV includes Netflix and HBO Max, with options to add other streaming favorites, as well as access to Freely, which offers 150+ live TV channels, 300+ games, and thousands of content apps through the Google Play Store.
The Vodafone TV hub comes with a small but powerful plug-in device that supports 4K picture quality, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. It also features a companion app that allows viewers to continue watching their favorite programs on the go, mirroring profiles, recommendations, favorites, and gameplay across devices for a seamless entertainment experience.
Ernest Doku, mobiles spokesman at Uswitch, commented on the double launch by Vodafone. “Vodafone’s double launch is a bid to be your ‘everything’ provider – one company for your mobile, broadband, telly and streaming, all on a single bill,” he said. Doku advised customers to weigh the cost of SuperMobile against their everyday experience and to consider the long-term value before signing up.
