As the war in Iran winds down, Democrats are strategizing to keep the focus on the affordability crisis, despite potential gas price reductions.

The conclusion of hostilities in Iran has sparked speculation about a potential decrease in gas prices. However, Democrats are determined to keep the spotlight on the broader affordability crisis, aiming to hold President Donald Trump accountable for the rising cost of living.
With the average cost of a regular gallon of gas reported at $3.99 by AAA on Thursday, the political landscape is shifting. The recent surge in gas prices, which peaked above $4 a gallon, was largely attributed to Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil transportation.
As Trump announced the end of hostilities, he declared, “Let the oil flow!”
Democrats’ focus on affordability beyond gas prices
Senate Democrats are keen on reminding voters about the origins of the gas price hike. “People are stressed out,” noted Sen.
Tim Kaine of Virginia. “People don’t forget what the price of gas was on February 27 and they know how much more they’re paying now.”
However, Democrats argue that the affordability issue extends far beyond gas prices. Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) emphasized, “I’m glad that gas is down for all Americans, because I don’t want Americans to be suffering because of the president’s stupid decisions about going to war. But number two, affordability is not just gas, electricity prices, being able to buy a home, being able to buy food – everything’s expensive.”
Trump’s policies and their economic impact
Gallego’s victory in the 2026 Senate race, despite Trump’s win in Arizona, highlights the complex political dynamics at play. Trump’s return to office has seen the implementation of multiple policies that have contributed to rising prices, including a series of tariffs and the war in Iran.
Trump has downplayed the affordability crisis, even going so far as to say, “I love the inflation,” following a report that showed a 4.2 percent year-over-year increase in the Consumer Price Index in May. This remark baffled many, including Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who questioned the president’s stance.
Political strategies and the affordability crisis
In Texas, the Lone Star Rising PAC, a pro-Talarico super PAC, has released an ad blaming Trump and Attorney General Ken Paxton for rising inflation. The ad, set to air during the World Cup, highlights the increased costs of gas, beer, and soccer tickets.
Democrats are also focusing on childcare, releasing an agenda to combat the high price of child care. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Vice Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, stated, “Trump says we can’t afford child care. The truth is we can’t afford to ignore child care.”
With only 47 seats in the Senate, Democrats are eyeing key races in Texas, North Carolina, Maine, Alaska, and Ohio. Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, the sole Democrat running for re-election in a state Trump won in 2026, has made affordability a cornerstone of his campaign. Despite Trump’s endorsement of Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) to challenge Ossoff, the Democratic incumbent has remained focused on the affordability message.
