WSBK Phillip Island Day 2: Carlos Checa fastest overall, pulverizes lap record

Carlos Checa was again fastest overall on the second day of World Superbike testing at Phillip Island.
The Spaniard was not only the fastest in both the morning and afternoon sessions, he also pulverized the previous lap record held by Regis Laconi on this circuit, by almost half a second with a scorching 1.

30′578.
Unfortunately the day was marred by numerous crashes.
Marco Melandri, Sylvain Guintoli, Mark Aitchison, both Kawasaki Racing Team riders Joan Lascorz and Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea all went legs up, but only Rea’s crash (after taking 3rd in the morning session), seemingly due to a mechanical failure of his Honda CBR1000RR resulted in him being lifted out by helicopter to be taken to the hospital.

The Castrol Honda rider seems to have been diagnosed, yet to be confirmed, with a fractured left hand and wrist, which could seriously hinder his partecipation in Sunday’s season opener.
Second fastest of the day was Sylvain Guintoli followed as we said by Rea, then Jakub Smrz and Joan Lascorz coming to grips with the 2011 Ninja, while Max Biaggi took the sixth spot followed by Michel Fabrizio, Yamaha duo Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty and Tom Sykes closing out the top ten.

Not cracking the top ten in these two days of testing has been the struggling BMW factory and privateer teams, all four riders (Corser, Haslam, Toseland, Badovini) have been down on the charts, more than two seconds off pace.
