The launch of the SafeKab app in Inverness has marked a significant advancement in taxi safety, providing a much-needed solution for both passengers and drivers. Originally introduced in 2023, this pioneering application is now set to expand its reach beyond the Highlands, partnering with independent operators in Moray, Stornoway, Cambridge, and Bristol.

This expansion aims to enhance the safety and security of taxi journeys throughout the UK.

Key features of SafeKab

SafeKab is the first app of its kind, specifically designed to address safety concerns, particularly for women using public transport. The app offers a range of innovative features that enhance the user experience and provide peace of mind.

One of the standout features is the one-time code generated for each journey, which passengers must verify with the driver before entering the vehicle. This ensures that they are getting into the correct car.

Additionally, passengers receive an image of their assigned driver along with vehicle details, allowing them to feel more secure about their ride. The app also includes a built-in panic button, enabling users to alert authorities in case of an emergency. Furthermore, a SafeKab wallet allows users to deposit money for their fare, streamlining the payment process.

Empowering drivers with safety tools

Recognizing the importance of driver safety, SafeKab is introducing a unique SOS button that can be worn like a wristwatch or attached to a keychain. This device connects to the app and allows drivers to send live video and audio feeds of any incidents directly to the control room. This feature not only enhances driver safety but also provides an additional layer of security for passengers.

Since its inception, SafeKab has seen impressive growth, starting with just 50 drivers and now boasting 150 registered users. The app has been downloaded over 16,000 times, with a significant surge of 6,000 downloads in the past four months alone. Gavin Johnston, the owner of Inverness Taxis, emphasizes the importance of feedback in refining the app’s features, ensuring it meets the needs of both drivers and passengers.

Addressing the demand for safe transportation

As SafeKab continues to expand, Johnston highlights the need for more drivers across the Highlands to meet the increasing demand, particularly from tourists seeking reliable transportation options. The app not only aims to improve safety but also seeks to provide a competitive alternative to app-based services like Uber, empowering independent taxi operators to collaborate and thrive in a challenging market.

Users like Julie and Emma have shared their positive experiences with SafeKab, noting the reassurance that comes from knowing the details of their driver and vehicle. With features that allow tracking of the ride and a history of past trips, passengers feel more in control of their transportation choices.

As SafeKab rolls out to additional cities, it is poised to become a national app, aiming to capture a significant share of the UK taxi market. With over 400,000 taxi drivers in the country, achieving even 20% market penetration would be a substantial success for this innovative safety solution.
