The owner of Aberdeen Airport has unveiled an ambitious plan to invest £350 million over the next five years, marking the largest investment since the airport’s establishment. AGS Airports, which manages Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton airports, aims to accelerate growth and enhance connectivity across these key transport hubs.

Significant investment for regional development

This announcement follows the acquisition of AGS Airports by AviAlliance in a deal valued at £1.5 billion. The new investment is expected to play a crucial role in driving economic and social prosperity throughout Scotland.

Kam Jandu, the chief executive of AGS Airports, emphasized the importance of this investment in strengthening the airports’ connectivity, which is vital for the success of the regions they serve.

Jandu stated, “We have ambitious plans for the long-term, sustainable growth of our airports, including the strengthening of our connectivity which underpins the success of the regions we serve.” He further noted that this investment would not only improve the infrastructure of the airports but also enhance their roles in facilitating trade and tourism, ultimately generating meaningful employment opportunities across the country.

AviAlliance’s long-term vision

Gerhard Schroeder, managing director of AviAlliance, highlighted that this investment aligns with the company’s long-term vision for its airports. He expressed optimism about working with AGS’ regional and national partners to unlock the full potential of Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton airports. “This investment will assist AGS in accelerating its plans for delivering a superior passenger experience and growing connectivity,” Schroeder remarked.

As part of the investment strategy, Aberdeen Airport is set to receive significant upgrades to its airfield infrastructure, which will enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience. The £350 million investment will also support AGS’ sustainability agenda, reflecting a commitment to environmentally responsible practices in airport operations.

Leadership changes and future prospects

In conjunction with the investment announcement, AGS Airports has appointed Charles Hammond OBE as its new chair. Hammond, who previously served as the chief executive of Forth Ports for 23 years, is well-acquainted with the critical role that Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton airports play in driving regional economic growth across the UK. He expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, “It is an absolute privilege to have been appointed Chair of AGS.”

With the £350 million investment now confirmed, Hammond looks forward to collaborating with the AGS board to maximize the potential of the airports. This strategic investment not only promises to enhance the airports’ infrastructure but also aims to foster a more connected and sustainable future for Scotland’s aviation sector.
