The Flint Market project is on track for a summer 2027 finish, promising vibrant community spaces.

Construction leaders are optimistic that the new Flint market in Aberdeen will be completed by the summer of 2027, as the ambitious £40 million project progresses smoothly. Morrison Construction, the firm responsible for the development, recently showcased the advancements made at the site, which is poised to become a vibrant hub for food and drink.

Significant progress on site

Since its inception last spring, the Flint market has seen substantial progress, with foundational work and initial walls already in place. The project aims to create a seamless connection between Union Street and The Green through a striking glass tunnel, which will be constructed within the former BHS building.

This innovative design will also feature a scenic plaza, designed to host events and pop-up markets, enhancing the community’s social fabric.

Construction milestones and challenges

As the project nears its first anniversary, the transformation of the former department store is becoming increasingly evident. Contractors have reported excellent progress, particularly with the BHS section of the market. A new roof has been installed, and the steel framework for the main entrance on Union Street is now complete. However, the design faced scrutiny from historians concerned about preserving the aesthetic of the Granite Mile, leading to modifications that retained the original concrete frame while adding a modern glass facade.

Future developments and community impact

Looking ahead, the scaffolding surrounding the BHS is expected to be removed by early June, with the Union Street scaffolding following suit by mid-July. This will pave the way for the construction of a canopy over the high street entrance, further enhancing the market’s appeal. Simultaneously, work on the plaza area is set to commence, with preparations underway for essential infrastructure, including heating pipes and drainage systems.

Project director John Edwards expressed confidence that the market’s progress will become increasingly visible in the coming months. Once completed, the Flint market will feature 11 food and drink vendors, including the local favorite Fierce Bar, alongside retail units and a coffee shop. The anticipated opening is expected to invigorate the local economy and provide a dynamic space for community engagement.

As the project continues to unfold, local leaders, including council co-leader Christian Allard, have praised the momentum and vision behind the Flint market. With its expected completion in June 2027, followed by a brief period for tenant preparations, the community eagerly anticipates the grand opening, which is projected for late 2027.
