Claire McDonald, a 46-year-old mother from Inverurie, has turned to the fast-growing fitness phenomenon known as Hyrox as a means of motivation and recovery following a significant health challenge. After undergoing surgery to remove a pelvic tumor, Claire is set to compete at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in just two weekends, showcasing her resilience and dedication to fitness.

From surgery to strength: Claire’s Hyrox debut

Claire made her Hyrox debut in March at an event in Malaga, Spain, where she impressively placed 25th out of 60 competitors in the 45-49 age group. Her overall time of positioned her 327th among 792 women, a remarkable achievement considering her recent health struggles.

Despite being on an NHS waiting list for surgery, Claire signed up for her first race in July of the previous year, demonstrating her determination to regain her fitness.

“I booked Malaga last July knowing that I was still waiting for my operation,” Claire shared. “But I got a cancellation in September last year, which allowed me to focus on my training.” This proactive approach not only helped her physically but also mentally, as she quickly returned to her training regimen post-surgery.

Hyrox: A perfect blend of fitness and fun

Hyrox combines eight 1km runs with functional workout stations, including sled pushes, rowing, burpees, and lunges. This unique format allows participants like Claire to engage in varied exercises while being mindful of their physical limitations. Claire, who has dealt with degenerative disc syndrome affecting her spine, found that Hyrox’s structure accommodates her condition, enabling her to enjoy fitness without exacerbating her health issues.

“Trampolining was my background when I was younger, but I have a condition to my spine,” she explained. “They didn’t want to operate because the risks were too high. I just know how to manage it.” Claire has successfully completed marathons and triathlons in the past, but she believes that Hyrox’s shorter bursts of running are more suitable for her current fitness level.

Community support and future aspirations

Claire is an active member of the Hyrox community at Garioch Sports Centre, where she participates in group classes and utilizes gym space dedicated to this fitness trend. Her experience in Malaga was not without challenges, including technical difficulties with her GPS watch and navigating the course. However, the support from her husband, who cheered her on, made the experience unforgettable.

“In terms of atmosphere, my husband said I was like a kid in a playground,” Claire recalled. “I absolutely had the best experience. I was massively proud of myself because I had done a lot of the training on my own.” This sense of accomplishment has fueled her desire to continue competing, with her next race in Cardiff coinciding with her son’s participation in the British Amateur Boxing Championships.

Looking ahead, Claire aims to achieve a personal best in Cardiff and is already planning her third race in Gdansk, Poland, later this year. Despite her professional background in performance sports, Claire emphasizes that her journey with Hyrox is about maintaining her health and enjoying the process rather than solely focusing on competitive times.

“What I don’t want to do is get really competitive that it becomes all about times,” she stated. “It’s also got to be enjoyable as well. I’m not 21 anymore. I’m 46 years old.” Claire’s story is a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the joy of fitness, inspiring others to pursue their health goals regardless of life’s challenges.
