Participants can enjoy a 14-week fish-focused diet while contributing to research.

Exploring the benefits of fish consumption
In an innovative initiative, Aberdeen University is inviting individuals to participate in a groundbreaking study aimed at promoting the consumption of local fish. The project, known as the FAMOUS study, is designed to highlight the health benefits associated with a fish-based diet.
Participants will enjoy a carefully curated 14-week menu, crafted by the expert dieticians at the Rowett Institute, which will be monitored for health impacts.
Understanding the FAMOUS study
The FAMOUS study, which stands for Fish and Meat: Outcomes and Understanding Study, is a £750,000 project funded by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
This research comes on the heels of a recent report from the Rowett Institute, which revealed that a significant amount of vital nutrients are lost due to the UK’s high fish export rates. The study aims to provide robust scientific evidence supporting the heart health benefits of increased fish consumption among the British population.
Who can participate?
The study is specifically targeting healthy, overweight individuals aged 30 to 65 who consume meat but have elevated blood lipids, sugar, or blood pressure. Importantly, participants should not be on any medication for heart disease or inflammatory conditions, nor should they be taking cholesterol-lowering drugs or dietary supplements. By participating, individuals will not only receive a free health check and dietary advice but will also have their meals provided for the entire 14-week duration.
Delicious meals and health monitoring
Participants in the FAMOUS study can look forward to a variety of delicious fish-based dishes, including curries and fish cakes, designed to showcase the rich flavors of local seafood. Jules Griffin, director of the Rowett Institute and lead researcher of the study, expressed excitement about the menu, emphasizing that the region is home to some of the best fish and seafood globally. He noted that many people miss out on the diverse culinary options available, often limiting their fish intake to traditional dishes like fish and chips.
The importance of fish in our diet
Fish is not only a source of great taste but also an essential provider of nutrients such as vitamin D and polyunsaturated fats, which play a crucial role in protecting against serious health issues, including cardiovascular diseases. The FAMOUS study aims to encourage participants to explore the benefits of incorporating more fish into their diets while contributing valuable data to the ongoing research on dietary impacts on health.
