How many drinks should you offer tradespeople? A guide

Navigating the complexities of hospitality when hiring tradespeople can be tricky. Here's what you need to know.

When it comes to hiring tradespeople for home repairs or renovations, many homeowners find themselves grappling with a common question: how many drinks should they offer? A newly launched calculator tool is here to help with this tricky decision, taking into account factors like how long the work will take and how much interaction you expect.

Recent studies reveal that while most homeowners typically offer around three cups of tea a day, a surprising number forget to provide biscuits, leaving many tradespeople in search of a snack. Isn’t it funny how such small gestures can make a big difference?

Understanding the Statistics

A recent survey by Virgin Money, which included 2,000 adults who have hired tradespeople, sheds light on this topic. It turns out that 61% of homeowners regularly offer drinks during visits. However, 18% are a bit more selective, and only 6% go above and beyond with more than five beverages a day.

Interestingly, a notable 36% of respondents admit that they often offer a drink with the hope it gets turned down. Why do you think that is?

Interestingly, while 77% view offering a drink as a polite gesture, nearly half—48%—feel that tradespeople should bring their own snacks and biscuits. This divide reveals a complex perspective on hospitality when it comes to home repairs. What do you think? Should we be more accommodating?

Factors Influencing Drink Offers

Several factors play a crucial role in whether or not a homeowner chooses to offer a drink to tradespeople. The length of their visit, their demeanor, and even the weather can all influence this decision. According to OnePoll.com, 22% of individuals believe offering refreshments helps build a positive rapport with the tradesperson. Isn’t it fascinating how these little gestures can impact relationships?

The most commonly offered drinks include coffee, tea, and water. Surprisingly, 6% of customers have received feedback about the quality of the drinks served. In fact, 23% have encountered refusals when trying to offer drinks, leading some to hold back in the future. Meanwhile, 30% take a more laid-back approach, simply leaving drinks out for tradespeople to help themselves. Do you think a self-serve option is the way to go?

The Challenges Faced by Tradespeople

In today’s world, plumbers, electricians, and gas engineers are among the most in-demand trades. Many respondents report hiring at least two different trades over the past year. Given the tough nature of these jobs, 53% of participants recognize the physical and mental challenges that tradespeople face, including irregular hours and complex tasks. It’s a wonder they manage to get the job done at all!

Simon Norman, the head of business banking at Virgin Money, emphasizes the importance of their new business accounts designed specifically for tradespeople. These accounts aim to ease some of the burdens self-employed individuals face, offering features like breakdown cover and no monthly fees. Norman points out, “It can be hard work to be a self-employed tradesperson.” He elaborates on the multifaceted responsibilities they juggle, saying, “On top of their expert work and long hours, they’re also managing all the paperwork that comes with running a business.”

Norman wraps up by highlighting the significance of these offerings: “That’s why we’ve launched this particular account, built specifically to support tradespeople and recognize the value of what they do.” Isn’t it about time we acknowledged the hard work they put in?
