When I transitioned to secondary school, my desire to play football clashed with the school’s focus on rugby, leaving me with limited options. Undeterred, I joined a local boys’ team known as Forest Hall Falcons. It was there that I found camaraderie and a sense of belonging, despite the gender barriers I faced.
Coaching during challenging times
In the aftermath of COVID-19, an unexpected opportunity arose when the club’s chairman invited me to coach at the football nursery. Although I had just completed Year 9, I eagerly accepted the challenge. This experience allowed me to merge my passion for playing with a new role in coaching, albeit with a different age group than my own. The joy of hearing young players excitedly share their stories after matches reinforced my connection to the sport.
The impact of mentorship
During the pandemic, I was fortunate to receive mentoring through The Girls’ Network. Initially reluctant to engage on video calls, my mentor, Zoe, played a pivotal role in boosting my self-confidence. Our sessions were structured to allow me space to express my thoughts and feelings, ultimately turning into a weekly highlight.
In our final meeting, we had the chance to connect in person and speak with a physiotherapist, which was invaluable as I contemplated my future career path. This mentorship provided clarity regarding my aspirations and inspired me to take on ambassadorial roles, where I could share my experiences and encourage others.
Embracing challenges and seizing opportunities
As I neared the end of Year 11, I faced a crucial turning point in my playing career. Despite my commitment and payment of dues, I found myself sidelined due to my coach’s reluctance to include a girl on the boys’ team. It became clear that I needed a change, leading me to fully embrace coaching.
After three years at the nursery, I was scouted by another coach and transitioned to Blakelaw, where I coached their under-8s and under-9s before moving to the under-16 girls’ team. At just 18, leading a group only a few years younger than myself was daunting, yet the respect and trust we built made it one of my most rewarding experiences.
Education and professional growth
My journey continued as I pursued a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Science at Access Sport Newcastle. In my first year, I was the only female student, a challenging experience that I overcame by graduating with the highest distinction. In my second year, a fellow female student joined me, providing a sense of camaraderie.
Despite financial struggles, I accepted a voluntary role at my college, viewing it as a vital investment in my future. This decision paid off, as it led to a paid position as a Performance Analyst, further solidifying my career path.
