Renewed Investigation into Unidentified Remains Found in Clocaenog Forest

The search for answers persists, years after human remains were discovered in Wales.

In November 2015, human remains were discovered in Clocaenog Forest, near Ruthin, Wales. The remains were identified as belonging to a male individual, raising questions about his identity and the circumstances of his death. This case has puzzled investigators for over a decade.

The remains were found by two brothers, Andrew and Mark Middle, during a camping trip. While gathering firewood on a chilly night, Mark’s flashlight illuminated what he initially thought was a moss-covered rock. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a human skull, leading to the recovery of a decomposed body and the initiation of a major murder investigation.

Investigative efforts and findings

Since the discovery, law enforcement has employed various forensic techniques to determine the man’s identity and the events leading to his death. Forensic examinations revealed that he had suffered significant injuries and was missing several teeth at the time of his death.

His remains suggest he was a well-built individual, likely between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a history of back problems. Experts believe he was born prior to 1950 and died between 2004 and 2011.

Facial reconstruction and DNA analysis

To assist in identifying the deceased, police have re-released mock-up facial images showing how the man might have looked in his 50s, 60s, and 70s. Additionally, forensic scientists extracted a full DNA profile from the skeletal remains. Unfortunately, the results did not match any entries in UK police or missing persons databases, leaving investigators at an impasse.

In their ongoing efforts to solve this case, law enforcement has sought public assistance. Crimestoppers, an independent charity, is offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction related to this case. Hayley Fry, the national manager for Wales at Crimestoppers, emphasized the importance of community involvement, urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward anonymously.

Details surrounding the discovery

The discovery occurred during the Wales Rally GB event, attracting numerous spectators to the forests of Denbighshire. Amid the excitement and rain, the brothers chose to camp close to the rally. What began as an exhilarating weekend took a dark turn when Mark discovered the skull that would trigger a significant police investigation.

Upon notifying authorities, a cordon was established around the area where the skull was found. Initially, there were concerns that the rally stage might be canceled due to the ongoing investigation. Over the following weeks, police conducted an extensive search, ultimately uncovering the rest of the decomposed body.

Continuing the search for answers

Despite thorough forensic examinations and evidence collection, including scraps of clothing found near the skeleton, no conclusive link to the deceased has been established. The investigation has made multiple appeals to the public, yet no significant leads have emerged. The identity of the man, now referred to as Clocaenog Forest Man, remains a mystery, leaving his family and friends without closure.

As police continue their efforts to resolve this case, the £20,000 reward is set to expire on April 16, 2026, underscoring the urgency of the matter. With each passing year, hope for resolution persists, and the call for justice for this unidentified individual continues.
