Diversity in Football: Football United’s Debut Against RAF

Football United, a new team championing diversity, played their first match against the RAF, showcasing the power of football to unite communities.

Diversity in Football: Football United's Debut Against RAF

In a remarkable display of unity and inclusion, football United a newly formed football team, played their inaugural match against the Royal Air Force (RAF) at Wantage FC in May. This event marked a significant milestone in the Community of Practice Ambassador Programme launched in 2026 to strengthen connections between grassroots football, County FAs, and the EDI Strategy, A Game Free from Discrimination.

The programme has grown into a network of 16 highly active ambassadors, each bringing unique experiences and expertise in areas such as race and ethnicity, LGBTQ+ inclusion, disability football, mental health, women and girls’ participation, faith engagement, and South Asian community development.

At the helm of Football United is Sophie Cook a trans advocate and former RAF member, who has rallied players from diverse backgrounds, ages, identities, and abilities under a shared passion for the game.

United by Diversity on the Pitch

Football United’s debut match was more than just a game; it was a celebration of diversity and inclusion. The team, composed of individuals representing eight of the nine protected characteristics, demonstrated the power of football to bring people together. Sophie Cook expressed her excitement about the strong turnout and the team’s commendable performance against a more experienced RAF squad.

“We were thrilled to see so many individuals from so many communities register their interest in representing Football United,” Sophie explained. “Incredibly, everybody that signed up was able to attend the match, showing just how strong the appetite is to celebrate diversity and inclusion through football. A narrow defeat for a team of strangers against a group that has played together for a considerable amount of time is something to be very proud of!”

RAF’s Commitment to Inclusion

Group Captain Louise Hancock RAF FA Director for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, highlighted the significance of the match. “We were proud to host the exhibition match between an RAF Combined XI and Football United. Events like this demonstrate that football can unite communities, challenge perceptions, and create an environment where everyone feels they belong, both on and off the pitch,” she stated.

The match not only showcased the talents of the players but also underscored the importance of fostering an inclusive environment in sports. The RAF’s commitment to these values was evident in their support for Football United’s inaugural fixture.

Growing the Football United Community

As Football United continues to grow, the team is eager to welcome more individuals to join their journey. Whether through playing, volunteering, or supporting from the sidelines, there are numerous opportunities to get involved. The team’s mission to promote diversity and inclusion in football resonates with many, and their inaugural match against the RAF was just the beginning.
