A grass fire near Heathrow Airport's runway led to the diversion of 18 inbound flights and significant delays. Both runways are now operational, but disruptions continue.
London Heathrow Airport, the UK’s busiest aviation hub, experienced significant disruptions today due to a grass fire near one of its runways. The incident, which began around 5:30 PM, prompted the diversion of numerous flights and caused delays for travelers.
Despite the swift response from emergency services, the aftermath of the fire continues to affect airport operations.
The fire, located adjacent to the Southern Runway was extinguished by approximately 6:07 PM. However, the incident had a ripple effect on flight schedules, with 18 inbound flights being diverted to various airports, including Stansted, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Luton, Paris CDG, Cairo, and Billund.
The London Fire Brigade and Heathrow’s fire service worked collaboratively to bring the situation under control.
Impact on Flight Operations
The grass fire necessitated the temporary closure of Runway 27 Left, forcing air traffic controllers to manage operations using only Runway 27 Right.
This shift created several challenges for air traffic management:
- Go-Arounds Multiple aircraft were instructed to perform go-arounds, aborting their final approaches to allow controllers to adjust spacing and merge traffic safely.
- Holding Patterns Inbound flights were held in stack patterns over several locations, including Biggin Hill, Ockham, Bovingdon, and Lambourne, as traffic sequenced for the single active runway.
- Departure Delays With Runway 27 Right handling both arrivals and departures, ground holds and taxiway queues accumulated rapidly across all terminals.
According to Aviation News UK normal operations are beginning to resume, but passengers are advised to expect continued disruptions throughout the day. Travelers have been urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
Emergency Response and Current Status
A spokesperson for Heathrow Airport stated, “Earlier today, our teams acted quickly to safely resolve a small grass fire adjacent to the Southern Runway. Thanks to their swift response, both runways are now fully operational. We apologize for any disruption and thank passengers for their patience and understanding. We wish everyone a safe onward journey.”
The London Fire Brigade reported that around one hectare of grassland was destroyed by the fire. Crews from Heathrow, Hayes, and Feltham fire stations attended the scene, working diligently to bring the incident under control. The Brigade was first called about the incident at 5:37 PM and had the fire under control by 6:07 PM.
As of the latest update, Runway 27L will reopen at 6:45 PM, with aircraft departing on the southern runway and arriving on Runway 27R. Airport officials continue to monitor the situation and advise passengers to stay informed about any further developments.
