The €100,000 Kilmurray Group Midlands National at Kilbeggan Racecourse promises an exciting showdown with top contenders like Native Speaker and Amirite.

The Kilbeggan Racecourse is gearing up for a thrilling evening of horse racing with the highlight being the €100,000 Kilmurray Group Midlands National. This prestigious event, sponsored by Kilmurray’s Homevalue Hardware will feature a competitive field of 14 horses vying for victory over a challenging distance of 3 miles and one furlong.
The race, which has become a seasonal highlight, will see some of the top trainers and jockeys in the sport competing for the coveted prize. Among the standout contenders is Native Speaker a horse that has shown impressive form in recent races, including a victory in the McHale Mayo National.
Trained by Henry de Bromhead Native Speaker will be ridden by stable jockey Darragh O’Keeffe who is expected to guide the horse to another strong performance.
The top contenders and their trainers
Henry de Bromhead holds a strong hand in this year’s Midlands National, with three horses entered in the race.
In addition to Native Speaker, de Bromhead will also field Amirite the 2026 winner of the Listed contest, and Raglan Road a consistent performer who has won two of his last three races. Amirite, carrying top weight of 11-12, will be ridden by Paddy O’Brien while Raglan Road will have the expertise of Harry Cobden in the saddle.
Willie Mullins one of the most successful trainers in the sport, will be looking to secure his first victory in the Midlands National since its inception in 1997. Mullins has entered two horses in the race: Uncle Tom a winner at the Punchestown Festival and Yoradreamer who finished as the runner-up in the Jim Ryan Memorial Novice Chase early last month. Paul Townend will ride Uncle Tom, while Seán O’Keeffe will take the reins of Yoradreamer.
The underdogs and dark horses
While the top contenders often steal the spotlight, the Midlands National is also known for its unpredictable nature, with underdogs and dark horses frequently making their mark. John Ryan a trainer from Tipperary, has entered four horses in the race, with Drumgill being his most promising contender. Drumgill, a seven-time winner, is likely to be Ryan’s best chance of landing the €100,000 prize. Ryan has an impressive recent record at Kilbeggan, having had two winners and two seconds from just six runners at June’s meeting.
Other notable entrants include Pride Of Place trained by Enda Bolger who was successful in the Tote Killarney National on his penultimate outing. Additionally, Boston Rover trained by Gordon Elliott has not run since last October but could prove to be a strong contender if he finds his form.
