A devastating family massacre in East St. Louis has left the community in shock, with five members of the same family tragically killed in a targeted shooting spree.

The tranquil community of East St. Louis, Illinois, was shattered on July 12 when a targeted shooting spree claimed the lives of five family members and left two others injured. The horrific incident unfolded across three separate locations, sending shockwaves through the tight-knit neighborhood.
The Illinois State Police and local law enforcement are diligently investigating the case, which has been described as a deliberate attack on a single family. Two teenagers, a 15-year-old girl and her 16-year-old boyfriend, were apprehended at Frank Holten State Park after a high-speed pursuit.
Authorities confirmed a familial connection between the suspects and the victims, adding a layer of complexity to the already grim scenario.
The Victims: Remembering Lives Lost
The victims have been identified as Cherie L. May, 49; Devin D. May, 24; Patricia A.
May, 74; Quentin L. Thompson, 21; and Shania W. Thompson, 25. Each of these individuals left behind a legacy of love and aspirations, making their untimely deaths all the more devastating.
Devin May, a devoted father to a 1-year-old daughter, was remembered by his wife, Chelsey Gatlin, as a great father, a great person, and a great man. His sister, Miranda May, expressed her disbelief and grief, stating, Devin’s a hard worker and he loved his family. I really don’t have no words to say. I can’t believe this. They were wonderful people with good hearts.
Shania Thompson, an aspiring chef with dreams of opening her own restaurant, and her brother Quentin, an artist passionate about drawing and anime, were also among the victims. Their loss has left a void in the hearts of their loved ones and the community.
The Aftermath: Community in Mourning
The shootings occurred at three distinct locations within a few miles of each other. Three people were killed at the Samuel Gompers Homes housing complex one person was killed near the intersection of North 39th Street and Summit Avenue, and another person was killed while two others were wounded at Jones Park. The community, known for its close-knit nature, is struggling to come to terms with the violence that has befallen their peaceful neighborhood.
This feels like something that would happen on ‘The First 48,’ not right across from you said Keveon Johnson, a resident of Gompers Public Housing. The violence has shaken a community that is not accustomed to such tragedy. Neighbor Samuel McClain Jr. echoed this sentiment, stating, It’s a peaceful neighborhood, so when everybody got woke up and heard that a female was deceased, that’s a lot because we’re not used to it.
The community’s sense of loss is palpable, with residents expressing their grief and disbelief. The close-knit nature of the neighborhood has been both a source of strength and a reminder of the profound impact of the tragedy.
Investigation and Support
The Illinois State Police and the East St. Louis Police Department are conducting a joint investigation into what they described as a targeted attack. Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly emphasized that the killings do not define the East St. Louis community and that the progress made will not be lost as a result of these terrible acts of violence.
A fundraising campaign has been organized to assist the surviving family members with sudden funeral costs and to establish support for Devin May’s young daughter. The family has raised nearly $3,000 of its $6,000 goal, highlighting the outpouring of support from the community. The funds will help cover funeral expenses for Cherie, Patricia, and Devin, provide immediate support for Devin’s daughter, and start a trust fund to secure her future.
The family will also require counseling and emotional support to begin healing from the trauma of the losses. The community’s support is crucial in helping them navigate this difficult time.
