The disaster struck the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, affecting areas along the Bhote Khoshi and Trishuli rivers. The Nepal tourist board has identified 384 travellers as missing, including 291 foreign nationals. The flood has destroyed critical infrastructure, including hydropower projects, highways, and bridges, making rescue efforts challenging.
The Scale of the Disaster
The flash flood is described as one of the most devastating disasters in Nepal since the earthquake. Several settlements along the Bhotekoshi river have been severely affected, with roads serving as major lifelines for Nepal-China trade.
The scale of damage is immense, with officials struggling to present a clear estimate of the losses.
Local authorities have confirmed that the death toll has risen to 31, with 93 people injured. The flood has also caused significant damage to the Trishuli hydropower project and swept away bridges in various locations. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with 15 helicopters mobilised to search for survivors.
Rescue Efforts and International Response
Rescue teams are racing against time to locate survivors as dusk approaches. The Nepalese army has rescued 88 survivors so far, with efforts focused on reaching another 115 people stranded in the village of Mailung. The international community has expressed solidarity with Nepal, with embassies from Australia, the EU, Finland, France, Norway, and Switzerland offering support.
The British embassy in Kathmandu has urged people in affected areas to follow local advice. Chinese state media outlet CCTV is reporting major casualties in Tibet, with President Xi Jinping ordering an all-out rescue effort. The Nepalese government has also sent a helicopter to rescue stranded South Korean nationals involved in constructing a hydropower plant in the area.
Impact on Tourism and Local Communities
The flood has disrupted travel plans for hundreds of tourists, including those bound for Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet and Gosaikunda, a holy lake in Nepal. The affected route is a key gateway to Langtang National Park trekking and other popular destinations. The Nepal Tourism Board is working to verify the whereabouts and safety status of those travelling through the region.
The disaster has once again taken a heavy toll on communities living along the Nepal-Tibet border. Last year, a similar flash flood in the same area killed 18 people and caused extensive damage. The current tragedy highlights the need for stronger monitoring and early warning systems to prevent such disasters in the future.
