Online MSc in sport coaching for practicing and aspiring coaches

Study flexibly while you coach: research-led modules, practical projects and professional partnerships to advance your career

Online MSc in sport coaching for practicing and aspiring coaches

The MSc Sport Coaching at the University of Staffordshire is a part-time, fully distance learning programme built for people who coach at any level — from grassroots and youth teams to elite performers. Delivered entirely online, the course is structured so you can continue your daily coaching commitments while studying; methods include podcasts, blogs, moderated discussion boards, recorded presentations and live drop-in sessions.

We also run an Open Day on 30 April where prospective students can learn more about the programme, meet staff and ask questions about study patterns and careers.

This programme combines applied practice with rigorous academic training. You will be encouraged to connect theory to real-world coaching through reflective assignments and workplace projects.

The course emphasises research-informed practice and gives you the chance to work with national and international organisations via a brokering service that links students to sport bodies for applied research. The flexible timetable allows you to study at times that fit your job and lifestyle while staying part of an active learning community.

Who this programme is for

The MSc is appropriate for active and aspiring coaches, PE teachers and further education tutors who want to develop professional expertise without pausing their career. Entry normally requires a UK undergraduate honours degree (2:2 or higher) in a related discipline — such as sports coaching, physical education, sport science or sports studies — plus evidence of coaching commitment and a minimum of a UK Level 2 coaching qualification (or working towards it). Applicants with degrees in other subjects may be considered based on substantial relevant experience and a UK Level 3 coaching qualification (or equivalent). If English is not your first language, you will need IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in all bands.

Curriculum and learning experience

The course uses an interdisciplinary approach, with some modules shared with our Masters in Sport and Exercise Psychology and Applied Sport and Exercise Science. This structure promotes cross-disciplinary dialogue and exposes you to specialist staff in coaching strategy, psychology and applied science. Topics covered include improving performance under pressure, leadership, group dynamics, coach decision-making and cultural influences on coaching practice. You will analyse performance datasets and reflect on your own coaching identity to refine methods that improve athlete outcomes.

Modules and the research project

Core elements include taught modules and a substantial research component. You will learn contemporary research methods and produce an applied thesis written in the style of a journal article. Students choose questions that relate to their workplace or match staff expertise; many graduates have seen their work accepted for publication. The programme also hosts guest lectures from industry figures and offers networking opportunities with organisations such as UK Coaching, and practitioners from elite environments have featured on programme podcasts.

Facilities, support and assessment

Although the course is delivered online, you will have access to the University’s specialised facilities, including a teaching clinic and student-led Sports Therapy services, a Gait Analysis Laboratory within the Biomechanics Facility, and Exercise Physiology and Human Performance laboratories. Remote students receive the same library, IT and careers support as on-campus peers. Learning is hosted on the Blackboard virtual learning environment where materials, discussion forums and multimedia resources are available.

Assessment blends formative and summative tasks with tutor and peer feedback and self-evaluation designed to connect assessment to your coaching practice. You will receive detailed guidance for each assignment and formal feedback within 20 working days. Additional support, including Student Inclusion Services, helps learners with disabilities, dyslexia or other needs to fully engage with coursework and assessments.

Staff, careers and practical details

The teaching team combines research-active academics and experienced coach educators. Key staff include Dr Alexander Blackett (Head of Department), Ashley Gill (Course Director), Professor Matthew Slater (sport and exercise psychology), and visiting fellows such as Louise Graham, Ian Freeman and Nick Levett. Career outcomes extend from advancing to head coach or head of coaching roles to positions within national governing bodies and coach education.

Part-time study normally runs over 2–3 academic years, while full-time postgraduate courses are usually 1 academic year in duration. For the course starting on 21 September 2026, the tuition fee for the part-time, distance learning route is £9,405 per course for both UK and international students. The fee does not cover core learning resources or living costs. Prospective students can apply for postgraduate loans where eligible. The Stoke-on-Trent campus remains the administrative hub for the award; to apply or to ask about funding and module choices, contact the enquiries team or join our Open Day on 30 April.
