Democrat Sarah McBride has defeated Republicans in Delaware, becoming the first openly transgender state senator in American history.
McBride is a Democrat and an activist and won her state senate race in Delaware, defeating a Republican, Steve Washington, in the First State Senate District. She had interned at the White House when Obama was in power and lobbied the Delaware General Assembly on a transgender rights bill signed in 2013.
In 2016 she became the first trans person to speak at a major party’s national convention, the Democratic National Convention, in which she gave a speech about freedom of expression, celebrating the possibility for Americans of voting LGBTQ candidates. She said: “Will we be a nation where there’s only one way to love, one way to look, one way to live? Or will we be a nation where everyone has the freedom to live openly and equally; a nation that’s stronger together?”
After winning the race for her state’s first Senate district and becoming the first openly transgender state senator in US history, McBride tweeted: “We did it.
We won the general election. Thank you, thank you, thank you.” McBride confirmed her success is a massive step for equality, LGBTQ rights and a celebration of freedom of expression. After her victory on Tuesday, she announced to be ‘incredibly grateful’ to her voters, she hopes her success will send a message to “a young person struggling with where they fit and how they fit into this world: that our democracy is big enough for them too and their voices matter.”
