Tom Sykes wasn’t able to repeat a second victory at the Assen circuit.
The Kawasaki rider tried to escape like he did in race one and set the pace, but the warmer surface conditions did not help him, but it did help Eugene Laverty.
The Aprilia rider stuck to Sykes tail for nineteen laps like a pilot fish, and with three laps to go Laverty pushed his way through at the Ruskenhoek to take the lead and despite being pressured by Skyes in the last lap, he defended his position to the finish line and won by just 0.
089s and take his second victory of the season after a double zero at Aragon.
This victory has put Laverty into third in the standings tied with Chaz Davies and Sykes.
Taking the third spot on the podium was Loris Baz.
The second Kawasaki rider battled for the entire race with Sylvain Guintoli and Jonathan Rea, but his aggressive riding style and battling spirit gave him his first podium of the season after he beat Rea to the finish line by just 0.
052s.
At the finish line Chaz Davies who was always following Baz, Rea and Guintoli outsmarted the Aprilia rider at the finish line to snatch fifth.
Guintoli’s sixth place is the first time in three rounds and nine races that he is off the podium, but he still leads the standings.
Leon Camier managed to take a very good seventh considering his precarious physical conditions and his position on the starting grid, but he was more than 13 seconds from Guintoli and 21 seconds from Laverty, but it still went better for him than team late Jules Cluzel who DNFd with technical problems.
For Marco Melandri it was another weekend to forget.
After being forced to skip race one due to a broken chain, the second race saw the Italian fade from fourth to sixth and continue to fade after the fifth lap and was down in 12th.
The BMW rider recovered somewhat and ended up battling with two other struggling riders Michel Fabrizio and Carlos Checa, but he still managed to finish ahead of both of them in 8th.
Checa once again closed out the top ten and Ducati has a massive amount of work to do because the next round is at Monza and those two long straights will further hurt the Panigale against the four cylinders.
Only fifteen riders were able to complete the race and everyone received points, Ayrton Badovini (who changed the engine on his 1199), Max Neukirchner, Ivan Clementi, Federico Sandi and Mark Aitchison, who in order were 11th to 15th.
Davide Giugliano crashed out of third during the sixth lap in a spectacular fashion, and Althea Racing had to say goodbye to his Aprilia RSV4 as the bike tumbling, broke its gas tank and the leaking fuel then caught fire.
