Althea Ducati’s Carlos Checa ran away again with another consecutive double win, the ninth race win of the season after taking the victory in a red flagged race 2 at Misano.
The first part of the race saw Checa grab the lead on lap 2 followed by an aggressive Max Biaggi, but a crash at turn 1 on the 11th lap by Marco Melandri and another by Leon Camier immediately after put a stop to the race to allow the marshals to clear the track of Melandri’s oil dripping R1.
In the restarted race that was shortened to 14 laps, both Melandri and Camier unable to take part as they didn’t return to their garages with their bikes, even if half a dozen marshals did try to help Melandri jump start his Yamaha.
This time Max Biaggi took the holeshot with Checa following after disposing of Leon Haslam on lap 2 and began nosing the tail of Biaggi’s Aprilia, but on lap 8 the Aprilia Alitalia rider made a huge mistake running wide which opened the door for Checa, who than ran away and crossed under the chequered flag and winning with a big margin.
Taking third was Noriyuki Haga who grabbed his first podium of the season for Pata Aprilia after pipping BMW Italia’s Ayrton Badovini at the finish line.
Finishing in fifth was a battered and bruised Leon Haslam after his huge highside in race one, followed by injured Michel Fabrizio who hurt his arm when he too crashed in race 1.
Sylvain Guintoli brought home points for his Effenbert Liberty team after team mate Jakub Smrz suffered another crash in a weekend to forget for the Czech rider.
Ruben Xaus took eighth, after we learned that team mate Jonathan Rea fractured his wrist and collarbone during this morning’s warm-up practice.
Taking the ninth and tenth position for Kawasaki was Joan Lascorz and Chris Vermeulen, while poleman Tom Sykes crashed, but was able to return to the race and finish 14th and last.
Yamaha’s Eugene Laverty also picked up some points in race 2 after running as high as third but a crash ended his podium dream and he limped home to a 13th place finish.
