Despite a successful comeback, Moray Cup's future remains unclear as stock dwindles.

Topics covered
In recent months, the north-east of Scotland has witnessed a remarkable resurgence of Moray Cup, a fizzy soft drink that has become a local favorite. Following a seven-year hiatus, the drink was reintroduced by Macduff-based wholesaler Deveron Direct, leading to overwhelming demand.
On launch day, eager fans queued for hours to purchase the iconic beverage, resulting in sales of approximately 800,000 bottles.
The success story of Moray Cup
Moray Cup’s return has not only delighted long-time fans but has also become a staple in local chippers and ice cream shops.
Des Cheyne, director of Deveron Direct, expressed his astonishment at the drink’s popularity, noting that they expect to sell between 750,000 and 800,000 bottles before the stock runs out. However, as the supply dwindles, Cheyne has indicated that the company will not be bringing the drink back permanently at this time.
Challenges ahead for Moray Cup
Despite the drink’s roaring success, Cheyne and his fellow director Kenneth Anderson have decided to pause production. Cheyne explained, “It’s a major, major commitment,” highlighting the challenges associated with scaling up production to meet potential demand. The last available batches of Moray Cup have seen a price reduction, from £14.99 for a pack of 12 to £9.99, as the company seeks to clear remaining stock.
Community support and cultural significance
The support from the public and local businesses has been overwhelming, with Cheyne expressing hope that the drink’s return has positively impacted sales during uncertain economic times. The drink’s cultural significance was further underscored when Aberdeen FC gifted a bottle of Moray Cup to their new Palestinian striker, Oday Dabbagh, as part of their initiative to welcome new signings with local gifts. The club referred to Moray Cup as an “iconic drink,” reinforcing its status in the region.
As Moray Cup continues to fly off the shelves, the future of this beloved beverage remains uncertain. While its comeback has been celebrated, the question of whether demand can sustain a permanent return lingers. For now, fans are encouraged to grab a bottle while they can, as the clock ticks down on this limited edition offering.
