A marine engineer's reckless decision leads to severe legal repercussions.
In a shocking incident that underscores the perils of alcohol dependency, a marine engineer was apprehended for driving under the influence, registering nearly five times the legal alcohol limit. Gary Hastie, 38, was found intoxicated behind the wheel of his vehicle outside a hotel near Aberdeen airport in Dyce on December 6 of last year.
Details of the incident
Hastie’s reckless behavior began when he attempted to leave the Leonardo Hotel car park to return home to Annan in Dumfries and Galloway. However, he struggled to navigate the car park barriers and ultimately abandoned his grey Audi A4 at the exit around AM.
Seeking assistance from the hotel receptionist, Hastie was unaware that his actions had already raised suspicions.
The receptionist, noticing the strong smell of alcohol and slurred speech, alerted the authorities after observing Hastie on CCTV attempting to re-enter his vehicle. Police arrived shortly after 3 AM and found him still seated in the driver’s seat, visibly intoxicated and wearing only one shoe.
Legal repercussions
Following his arrest, Hastie was taken to the police custody suite where a breathalyzer test revealed a staggering reading of 109 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 22 micrograms. In court, he pled guilty to the charges of drink driving, resisting arrest, and behaving in a threatening manner towards officers.
During the proceedings, fiscal depute Sofia Ramzan detailed how Hastie had become aggressive when approached by police, attempting to resist handcuffing. His defense attorney, Emma Bruce, explained that Hastie had been working offshore and was deeply affected by the news of a family member’s terminal illness, leading him to seek solace in alcohol.
Seeking help and moving forward
In light of his actions, Hastie has taken steps towards recovery by self-referring for alcohol dependency assistance. He expressed remorse for his behavior and the consequences it has brought upon him. Sheriff Morag McLaughlin disqualified Hastie from driving for 24 months and imposed a total fine of £1,675, which he is required to pay at a rate of £100 per month.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with alcohol dependency and the severe legal consequences that can arise from reckless decisions. It highlights the importance of seeking help and making responsible choices, particularly in moments of emotional distress.
