Workers investigate underground conditions to prevent delays in Castlegate's makeover.

Topics covered
In a significant step towards revitalizing Aberdeen’s city center, workers have commenced preliminary investigations at Castlegate, sealing off sections of this historic plaza. This initiative aims to uncover what lies beneath the surface, ensuring that the upcoming major revamp proceeds without unnecessary delays.
Addressing past challenges
The decision to investigate the underground conditions comes on the heels of setbacks experienced during the first phase of the Union Street revamp. The completion date for this phase has been postponed until next spring due to the discovery of a complex network of cables, often referred to as a “spaghetti” of utilities, beneath the surface.
Such challenges have prompted city officials to take proactive measures to avoid similar issues in the Castlegate project.
Castlegate is earmarked for a multi-million-pound makeover, which is part of a broader initiative to enhance the entire stretch of the Granite Mile, including the beachfront and Queen Street. The planned revamp of Castlegate is set to commence after the Tall Ships event in July, but preliminary digging will begin soon to assess the underground landscape.
Proactive measures to ensure smooth construction
Construction workers will be digging through decades-old slabs to identify any potential obstacles well in advance of the main construction phase. This proactive approach mirrors similar investigations conducted last year outside the Primark on Union Street, where engineers encountered unexpected complications due to old pipes and cables.
To mitigate the risk of delays, Morrison Construction, the firm responsible for the revamp, has already initiated preparations. A section of Castlegate has been sealed off for approximately a month, with the current works expected to conclude by May 23. These efforts will involve digging small, shallow trial holes to locate buried utilities and assess ground conditions.
Future vision for Castlegate
Earlier this year, council officials unveiled new design images that illustrate the envisioned transformation of Castlegate. The plans include enhancing the area around the Mercat Cross with additional outdoor seating, public art displays, and improved planting and street lighting. These upgrades aim to create a more inviting and vibrant public space, contributing to the overall rejuvenation of Aberdeen’s city center.
As the investigation progresses, residents and visitors alike are eager to witness the transformation of Castlegate, which promises to breathe new life into this historic area of Aberdeen.
