Daniel Coyle has kicked off his Spruce Meadows season with remarkable success, securing multiple victories in Calgary, Canada.

Daniel Coyle, the accomplished Irish equestrian, has made a stellar start to his season at the prestigious Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Canada. Riding aboard Nord Face VDL and FarrelCoyle has demonstrated exceptional skill and precision, capturing the attention of equestrian enthusiasts worldwide.

Mercer Cup Victory in the All Canada Ring
In the Mercer Cupheld in the All Canada RingCoyle was among 33 horse-and-rider combinations tackling a course designed by Irish FEI Course Designer Tom Holden. With only eight pairs delivering clear rounds in the opening round, Coyle and Nord Face VDL stood out by securing a clear round in 35.24 seconds, claiming the top spot.
Kyle King and Ninja BF secured the runner-up position, while New Zealand’s Katie Laurie and Miss Montreal P completed the podium. This victory marked the beginning of Coyle’s successful week at Spruce Meadows.
All-Irish Podium in The Recon Metal Cup
Coyle’s second victory came aboard Farrel in The Recon Metal Cup 1.55ma key qualifying competition for the RBC Grand Prix of Canada. The class drew 46 entries to the International Ringfeaturing a 605-metre track designed by FEI Course Designer Olaf Petersen Jr..
With only 12 combinations progressing to the jump-off, Coyle produced a brilliant clear round aboard Farrel, stopping the timers in 38.63 seconds to secure top spot. He also took the runner-up spot with Urville Zwhile Conor Swail completed an all-Irish podium with Clonterm Obolensky in third.
Spruce Meadows: A Favorite Destination
A regular visitor to Spruce Meadows, Daniel Coyle shared his enthusiasm for the venue: “Spruce Meadows is great. You come here for the four tournaments and you stay in one place, which we don’t get to do much. The horses can grow every week and you can jump a bigger class or a smaller class depending how your week is going so it’s a really big thing in our schedule.”
He added, “We plan to come every year, because we get to know the horses a little better before we go on tour but not only that, Spruce Meadows is one of the best places in the world.” This sentiment underscores the significance of Spruce Meadows as a premier equestrian destination.
National Show and Grand Prix Highlights
On Saturday, Coyle and Nord Face VDL claimed their second win together at the Spruce Meadows ‘National’ show, securing The Maritime Travel Cup. A course designed by Tom Holden attracted 37 starters, with eight progressing to the jump-off. Coyle and Nord Face VDL proved quickest with a clear round in 37.59 seconds.
In the RBC Grand Prix of Canadapresented by RolexCoyle and Farrel finished third despite a blistering jump-off time of 41.99 seconds. Colombia’s Mark Bluman and Landon de Nyze secured victory with a double-clear performance, while Belgian Jos Verlooy and Nixon Van’t Meulenhof finished second.
Conor Swail and Clonterm Obolensky also finished inside the top-10, showcasing the strong performance of Irish riders at the event.
