Wyndham Clark showcased remarkable resilience to win the BMW Championship, his third victory of the 2026 season, after a tense final-round battle with Rory McIlroy.
The BMW Championship concluded with a dramatic finish as Wyndham Clark secured his third PGA Tour win of the season. The American golfer held off a spirited challenge from Rory McIlroy to claim the title at Bellerive Country Club in St.
Louis.
Clark’s victory was far from assured, as he faced a fierce comeback from McIlroy, who had been chasing him down the stretch. The final round saw intense competition, with both players showcasing their skills under pressure.
Clark’s Resilience Under Pressure
Entering the final round with a five-shot lead, Clark’s advantage seemed substantial. However, McIlroy’s impressive play threatened to overturn the deficit. The Northern Irishman drew level with seven holes remaining, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion.
Clark’s ability to respond to the challenge was crucial. He made a run of three successive birdies in the closing holes, demonstrating mental toughness and precision. ‘It was weird – I wasn’t nervous but I was kind of out of it, making double bogeys. I can’t believe I didn’t make anything on the greens. But I kept trying to get myself going,’ Clark remarked post-victory.
McIlroy’s Fightback Falls Short
Rory McIlroy, who had been in joint-second place after the third round, put up a valiant effort to catch Clark. The back-to-back Masters champion gained two shots as Clark dropped three, but missed a crucial putt on the 14th hole with the scores tied.
‘I’m not playing well enough to be too disappointed to not win,’ McIlroy told CBS Sports. ‘I had my chances, but Wyndham stepped up. The way he played the last three holes, he showed a lot of character.’ McIlroy finished the tournament at 13 under par, four shots behind the winner.
Notable Performances and Final Standings
Patrick Cantlay also had a strong finish, closing his round with three birdies to secure second place at 14 under. Americans Chris Gotterup and Gary Woodland were on 11 under, with Collin Morikawa on 10 under.
Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre carded the joint lowest round of the day, a five-under 65, to finish in joint seventh place on 10 under. World number one Scottie Scheffler who had won the previous week’s opening play-off event, closed with a two-under 68 to finish joint 12th on seven under.
The season concludes with the Tour Championship at East Lake, Atlanta, where the top 30 players in the season-long standings will compete for a prize fund of $40 million. Along with McIlroy and MacIntyre, English players Tommy FleetwoodJustin RoseMatt Fitzpatrick and his brother Alex Fitzpatrick will be in the field.
