The 2026 Scottish Pipe Band Championships, held on July 25, 2026, in Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park, crowned Inveraray & District as the Grade 1 champions. The event, set against the backdrop of the iconic Dumbarton Rock featured nine competing bands and marked the fourth of the five major championships on the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA)‘s rota.
The championships stood out for their unique format, requiring Grade 1 bands to compete in both Medley and MSR (March, Strathspey, and Reel) events, mirroring the structure of the upcoming World Championships in Glasgow on August 14-15, 2026.
The Path to Victory
Inveraray & District claimed the championship title, followed closely by Field Marshal Montgomery from Northern Ireland and Peoples Ford Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia from Scotland. The competition was fierce, with St. Laurence O’Toole from Ireland taking home the Grade 1 drumming title.
The weather during the championships was exceptionally warm, with temperatures reaching around 28°C, adding to the intensity of the performances. The event concluded with a shorter massed bands performance, allowing many participants from Ireland and Northern Ireland to catch their flights home before the prize announcements.
Notable Performances Across Grades
In the Grade 2 category, Royal Burgh of Annan from Scotland emerged victorious with straight firsts, nearly securing their upgrade to Grade 1 for 2027. Their impressive wins in the UK, European, and Scottish championships along with a second place in the British Championships highlighted their exceptional skill and consistency.
The Grade 3A and Grade 3B categories also saw intense competition. Burntisland & District and Williamwood claimed the top spots in their respective grades, showcasing the depth of talent across all levels.
The Juvenile category featured six competing schools, with Dollar Academy and George Watson’s College securing the top two positions. Their performances underscored the bright future of pipe band music.
The Road to the World Championships
The Scottish Championships served as a crucial stepping stone for the upcoming World Championships in Glasgow. The results from this event have significant implications for the Champion of Champions points race, with Field Marshal Montgomery and Peoples Ford Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia tied at the top with 19 points each.
Inveraray & District despite their victory, chose not to compete in the UK Championships opting instead to perform at the Chicago Highland Games. This decision impacted their eligibility for the 2026 Champion of Champions title races.
The championships also highlighted the competitive drumming scene, with Field Marshal Montgomery leading the Grade 1 Drumming Champion of Champions race with 21 points, followed by St. Laurence O’Toole with 17 points.
