Amanda Nkomo, a 32-year-old stay-at-home mum living in Manchester, found herself confronting significant postnatal weight gain after the birth of her son Elijah. Before that pregnancy she had typically weighed between 78kg and 84kg, wearing roughly a size 14, but by November 2026 she had reached a peak of 95kg (209lb) and was wearing size 18 clothes.

At 5ft 2in her body mass index (BMI) sat at about 38.3, which she describes as a wake-up call that pushed her to seek lasting change rather than quick fixes.

Like many new parents, Amanda struggled with disrupted routines and comfort eating while recovering from a C-section and caring for a colicky baby.

She initially made steady progress by reducing portion sizes and cutting out biscuits, dropping around 16kg (35lb) in a few months to reach 79kg. However, as often happens, her progress stalled with a frustrating plateau five months before her planned wedding in early July.

This is when she began experimenting with a homemade drink that combined apple cider vinegar, ginger and cayenne pepper.

The turning point: why the shot felt different

Amanda had tried many approaches over the years, from fad diets to organised programmes, and had previously experienced temporary success on extreme plans like water-fasting. Those methods proved unsustainable, so when she reached the plateau this time she wanted a practical, breastfeeding-compatible option. She avoided prescription weight-loss injections because of limited safety data for nursing mothers and potential side effects. Revisiting apple cider vinegar, whose acetic acid is often cited as appetite-reducing, she combined it with ginger to improve flavour and added cayenne for the warming effect of capsaicin, which some believe may slightly boost calorie burn.

The 60ml routine and its effects

Amanda prepared a small, concentrated shot—about 60ml—each morning and sometimes doubled the dose when she needed an extra push. The ginger masked the vinegar’s bitterness, making the blend easier to drink regularly. Within weeks she noticed a return of weight loss; the shot seemed to curb cravings and helped her feel fuller between meals. Sixteen weeks after adopting the routine she reached her initial goal of 62kg (137lb), just in time for her wedding. She later relaxed and paused the shots, which coincided with a rebound to 67kg (148lb), prompting her to resume the habit and ultimately settle near 52–55kg (114–121lb), wearing a size 8.

Diet, activity and long-term balance

Amanda stresses that the drink was not a miracle cure by itself: she also reduced starchy carbs like potatoes, bread and pasta, and kept portion control central to her plan. As a busy mum of two—her children Gianni, three, and Elijah, one—formal gym sessions were impractical, so she integrated movement into daily life, walking to collect her daughter from school and using hand weights at home. She also learned from earlier mistakes by avoiding overly restrictive programmes that led to regain. Although some friends speculated about pharmaceutical aids such as Ozempic, Amanda attributes her results to the combination of dietary shifts, regular activity and the supporting role of the morning shot.

From personal method to a small business

Encouraged by her own success, Amanda has developed a small wellness line called Zing-Fit, selling ginger shots and promoting the idea of incorporating apple cider vinegar into an achievable routine. Her husband, Ehigie Oriakhi, also 32, joined the effort: he dropped around 32kg (71lb) in preparation for the wedding, regained some weight, and then lost further kilograms after adopting the shots alongside healthier habits. Amanda emphasizes that clinical evidence for vinegar’s weight-loss effects is limited, but for her and her community the practice has provided motivation, appetite control and a sustainable way to maintain a healthier weight.
