One of Elton John’s most remarkable songs, Your Song, was released 50 years ago today on October 26th 1970. His collaborator, Bernie Taupin wrote the song in moments and Elton John composed the music in less than 20 minutes.
After 50 years since it’s release, the song has still received over 3,7 million seconds of UK radio airtime only last year, proving the song is still one of the country’s favourite.
When the Rocket Man started his collaboration with author Bernie Taupin, he did not know that was going to be the best song of his life and one of the most iconic collaborations of British music. Their first album “Empty Sky” received enormous success and immediately after they made a second album “Elton John” containing the magical “Your Song”, the song that remained one of the fans’ favourite and that John used to play at the end of every concert.
In a few weeks “Your Song” became a Top Ten in both US and the UK.
‘Your Song’ tells the story of a boy who deeply loves a girl, the words and the music are all about this love. About the song’s story, Elton John admitted he knew who the girl was and could feel the love in Bernie’s words because he knew him perfectly, so he tried to compose music that was as sweet as those words in order to respect those feelings.
Elton John always confessed to love this song and that he considered this to be the best love song he had written. Over the last five decades, the song has been covered by several artists, like Lady Gaga and Ellie Goulding, Elton John himself recorded it several times creating many versions. A new version was made in 1999 when he guest-starred in The Simpsons and in 2001 when it was used by Luhrmann in Moulin Rouge! And it was sung by Ewan McGregor. Another remarkable song by the Rocket Man is Candle in the Wind written for Marilyn Monroe and also made as a tribute for Lady Diana.
