Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary with a special gift from their grand-children.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh commemorated their 73rd wedding anniversary by releasing a photograph which showed them opening a card from their great-grandchildren. The card was handmade by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The photograph of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip showed them sitting on a sofa, in Windsor Castle’s Oak Room, and they appear to be reading the message in the card from their grand-children.

Chris Jackson from Getty Images took the picture which also shows a small pile of anniversary cards and letters sent by well-wishers on a nearby table.

Queen Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey on November 20 1947 when she was a 21-year-old. Their relationship has lasted the longest of any British monarch.

In the new photograph, the Queen is wearing a pale blue double wool crepe dress by Stewart Parvin and a chrysanthemum brooch made from sapphires and diamonds set in platinum.

On the other side, Philip wears a blazer, shirt, tie and trousers.

The Queen and the Duke, who has retired from public duties, have had a low-key celebration given the fact that they are self-isolating at Windsor Castle. There is no traditional gift, jewel, or colour associated with 73rd wedding anniversaries in the UK.

In 1997, on their golden wedding anniversary, the Queen paid a touching tribute to her husband, saying:

He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years

Philip praised the Queen for how tolerant she is of him and he said:

I think the main lesson that we have learned is that tolerance is the one essential ingredient of any happy marriage
