Four Great Walking Itineraries in Milan

Milan is blessed with an abundance of interesting places to walk around. In this article we’ll take a closer look at some of Milan’s most fascinating districts and what they have to offer.

The Brera District

Firstly, let’s take a look at the Brera district where we can stroll around the majestic botanical gardens situated in the Palazzo di Brera. Built in 1774, this incredible garden complex spans 5,000 square meters and contains more than 300 species of plants.

Delving deeper into the Brera district, Sempione Park is also worth checking out on foot. Covering an impressive 116 acres, Sempione Park provides a calming refuge from hectic city life. The park was conceived in the 1800s and contains gravel paths, the triumphal Arch of Peace, a lake, and the small Arena Civica which is often used for concerts and sporting events. From the park’s Torre Branca tower you can enjoy majestic views of the entire city.

The Navigli Neighborhood

Milan’s notorious Navigli neighborhood, named for its distinctive canals, is one of the most vibrant areas of the city to meander. The Navigli neighborhood is incredibly hip, with a plethora of bookshops, designer boutiques and bars lining its streets. The area has plenty of attractions for visitors such as boat rides, interesting artists’ studios, trendy shops and popular bars.

Canals are an integral part of the Navigli experience. The Navigli canals were first implemented in the area in the 12th century and were used to irrigate the fields and power the mills. In the late 14th century they became a popular mode of transport having by then expanded to the central areas of the city. Much of the stone used to build the famous Duomo of Milan was transported to the city along these canals.

Montanelli Public Gardens

Another area well worth exploring on foot is the Montanelli Public Gardens which covers an impressive 160,000 square meters. The gardens are thick with trees, fountains and natural green spaces, making it a go-to area for those seeking rest and relaxation. The gardens benefit from several attractions such as the notable 17th century Dugnani Palace, the fascinating Natural History Museum, and the brilliant Modern Art Gallery. Due to a lack of green spaces in the city, visitors make the most of Montanelli Public Gardens’ lush trees and gardens, where they can feel refreshed on long, hot summer days.

The Porta Nuova District

The Porta Nuova area of Milan is a district that should be on every walker’s list of places to explore. Its popular Vertical Forest consists of two towers surrounded by an abundance of trees, plants, and shrubs. The Vertical Forest project was initially envisioned as a way to reintroduce green areas to the bustling city, effectively creating an environmentally friendly oasis in this popular district.

The Library of Trees Park is also situated in the Porta Nuova district. It is a public garden where declarations of love and commitment are written by locals from nearby neighborhoods, promising to look after this majestic botanical garden.
