Britons arrive home early in their holiday to beat Portugal quarantine

The chaos happened after the UK Government decided to move Portugal to the amber list.

Thousands of Britons people hurried to leave Portugal before new quarantine rules came into force. There were thirty-nine flights scheduled to leave from Faro Airport in the Algarve for the UK on Monday. It was almost double than routine total.

Wizz Air flight was the last departure of the day which land at Doncaster Sheffield Airport at 2.05 am on Tuesday.

The government gave chance to make the UK travellers land in the UK before 4 am on Tuesday. So they don’t need to self-quarantine at home for 10 days.

The chaos happened after the UK Government decided to move Portugal to the amber list. The announcement was made after 17 days the limitation on international leisure elevated.

UK Travellers who visiting Portugal showed anger

Not a few holidaymakers and travel firms showed their anger when the announcement was made last Thursday.

Alan and Lisa Pechey from Cambridge paid a total of £800 to fly back to Gatwick on Monday. They were on holiday in Lisbon. Of course, it was quicker than organised.

Ana Pacheco from Islington, north London, paid £300 for her flight home. A 28-year-old woman was on holiday near Porto. She revealed that losing money on this trip, plus £300 extra, “is quite annoying,” she said.

Marcus Gardner from Battersea, south London mentioned that the flight was much busier than before. When he went to Portugal, it was only a few people on the plane. However, the plane for coming back was in full capacity. Even a lot of people fills the airport expecting the flight.

Extra charged from Portugal to UK

People should be paid extra to went back to the UK before the deadline. Ryanair from Faro to Bournemouth priced £285 for a flight on Monday when it just £17 on Wednesday. Then EasyJet flights on Monday charged £227 from Faro to Gatwick when it’s only £53 on Tuesday.

Not only that but also the tourists faced difficulties getting the pre-departure tests expected by the Government for people visiting in the UK. The Department for Transport said the condition in Portugal “needed quick action to protect the earnings made with the vaccine rollout”.

It showed that the positivity measure for Covid-19 tests in Portugal had almost doubled since the travel lists were first performed four weeks earlier.
