Cold temperatures across the UK
Today marks another chilly day for the United Kingdom, with temperatures plummeting to as low as -1°C in certain regions. The Met Office has indicated that Scotland and northern England will experience the coldest conditions, with the possibility of snow on higher ground.
Meanwhile, southern England will enjoy slightly warmer temperatures, ranging between 2°C and 5°C.
Weather warnings in effect
A yellow snow and ice warning has been issued for parts of northern England, effective from 6 AM to 2 PM today. This alert is a precautionary measure as the UK Health Security Agency has also declared a cold weather alert for areas in the northeast of England, Yorkshire, and The Humber.
These warnings highlight the potential hazards posed by the cold snap, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Freezing rain: a rare phenomenon
In addition to the cold temperatures, the Met Office has warned of a rare weather phenomenon known as freezing rain, which could affect parts of the Pennines. Freezing rain occurs when liquid precipitation strikes a cold surface and freezes almost instantly, creating a layer of clear ice. While this can lead to visually stunning scenes, it also poses significant risks, including downed trees and power lines, as well as dangerously icy roads and pathways.
Forecast for the coming days
According to Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert, rain is expected to move eastward throughout Saturday, interacting with the colder air and resulting in snowfall, particularly in northern England. Accumulations of 2 to 5 cm are possible over the Cheviots and North York Moors, with localized accumulations at lower levels also likely. The cold air will persist into Sunday and Monday, with southern regions remaining mostly dry but cloudy.
Outlook for London and beyond
In London, cloudy conditions are anticipated this morning, with rain expected to begin around 1 PM and continue until 9 PM. Maximum temperatures will hover around 5°C. Tomorrow’s forecast indicates a cloudy day with some brief bright spells possible in the morning, but temperatures will again peak around 5°C. As the week progresses, brighter conditions with sunshine are likely to develop, followed by milder and more unsettled weather moving in from the Atlantic.
