Weather predictions for the UK
As winter continues to grip the UK, weather forecasts are indicating a significant snowfall event expected to commence next week. The Met Office has issued warnings for “hill snow” and “possible icy stretches” from Monday through Wednesday, with weather maps from WXCharts providing a detailed outlook on where these conditions are likely to occur.
Timing and intensity of snowfall
The ECMWF model suggests that snow will begin to fall across Scotland and northern England starting at midnight on Monday, extending into the early hours of Tuesday. In areas where snow is expected to be most intense, particularly in western Scotland, snowfall rates could reach approximately 3cm per hour.
This means that residents in these regions should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions as snow is forecasted to reach as far south as Manchester.
Snow accumulation and impacts
According to snow depth charts, the Scottish Highlands could see accumulations of up to 27cm (11 inches) of snow, while rural areas in northern England may experience around 9cm (3.5 inches). The Met Office’s forecast highlights that rain will push into northern and western regions, accompanied by hill snow and icy stretches. Meanwhile, southern and eastern areas are expected to remain drier with occasional brighter spells. However, breezy conditions will persist, and temperatures are anticipated to gradually become less cold.
Long-term weather outlook
Looking ahead, the Met Office predicts that temperatures for the remainder of February are likely to be above average. From February 20 to March 1, Atlantic frontal systems are expected to sweep across the UK, bringing spells of rain, particularly in western areas. While some eastern regions may remain largely dry, strong winds are also anticipated, especially along coastal areas. As the month progresses, unsettled weather patterns are expected to continue, with heavy rain and strong winds likely at times, interspersed with drier, brighter periods.
Preparation for winter weather
As the UK braces for this winter weather, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and prepared. Monitoring local weather updates and taking necessary precautions, such as avoiding travel during heavy snowfall and ensuring homes are winter-ready, can help mitigate the impacts of these weather events. With the potential for significant snowfall and icy conditions, being proactive is key to navigating the challenges that winter brings.
