Staff take part in the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup at the University of Kent

Join colleagues for a relaxed inter-departmental tournament with lunchtime events, social opportunities and a running leaderboard

Staff take part in the Vice-Chancellor's Cup at the University of Kent

The Vice-Chancellor’s Cup is the University of Kent’s staff sporting and social series created to bring departments together. Designed as an inter-departmental tournament, the competition invites teams from every corner of the campus to take part in short, energetic events.

From January 2026 to September 2026, staff will have the chance to compete in a variety of formats aimed at inclusion and enjoyment rather than elite performance. Whether you work in administration, teaching, research or facilities, the emphasis is on connection, friendly rivalry and having fun across the University.

The tournament schedule spans a broad range of activities that mostly fit into lunch hours and typically last an hour, making it easy to join without disrupting the working day. The 2026-26 programme features 14 events across the academic year, with a mix of on-campus and some off-campus challenges.

Events are organised so that people of all abilities can participate: no specialist experience is required. A short promotional video and an image gallery highlight previous moments and explain why so many staff choose to get involved.

Tournament format and schedule

The structure of the Cup is straightforward to follow and designed around accessibility. Each event awards points that feed into an overall leaderboard which is updated after every fixture; the standings and individual event results are published so teams can track progress. Some rounds include bonus mechanisms such as a tactical joker that teams can play to increase their score. Most sessions are free for participants, although certain off-campus activities may carry a fee, which is announced in advance. Organisers aim to keep each activity to around an hour during midday to make it easy for staff to attend between shifts or meetings.

Joining a team and eligibility

Teams and roles

Departmental teams are encouraged to enter and to bring together colleagues from different roles. The spirit of the event is social first, competitive second—so experience is not a requirement and newcomers are particularly welcome. This year, 10 teams have entered the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup, representing a mix of academic and professional services units. If a department does not field its own group, staff have the option of joining the Vice-Chancellor’s team, which offers an extra route into the competition to ensure everyone who wants to take part can do so.

Participation expectations

Once you join a team, booking into individual events requires an active membership level with Kent Sport. To register and reserve places you will need a minimum of Kent Sport Pay to Play membership, which allows organisers to manage numbers and plan logistics. The Pay to Play membership is the membership tier used to authorise event bookings and is available through Kent Sport. Team captains or department coordinators typically handle sign-ups, but individuals can also secure their own spaces through the Kent Sport system when events open for booking.

Logistics, membership and contact

The Vice-Chancellor’s Cup is delivered by the Kent Sport Sports Development team, who coordinate fixtures, results, and communications. For questions about rules, sign-ups, or accessibility, reach out to the organisers by email at [email protected]. The delivery team publishes highlights and summary reels after several events—past compilations include the 2026-2026 VC’s Cup highlights—so participants and supporters can relive memorable moments and celebrate achievements across the competition.

Costs and bookings

Most events are provided free of charge, but certain off-campus or specialist activities may require a small fee to cover venue hire or equipment; this will always be communicated in advance. Teams should register early to secure places, and players must ensure they have the necessary Kent Sport Pay to Play membership before attempting to book. To register interest for the next cycle, or to join the VC’s Cup for the 2026/26 season, email the team at [email protected]. The organisers look forward to welcoming new participants and seeing colleagues meet, compete and enjoy the camaraderie that the Cup brings.
