Jon Snow, the iconic face of Channel 4 News for over three decades, has bravely revealed his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. The 78-year-old journalist, known for his distinctive style and incisive reporting, is set to share his journey in an upcoming documentary, offering a candid look at living with dementia.

The documentary, titled Jon Snow: A Last Big Storywill premiere at the Sheffield Documentary Festival before airing on Channel 4 on June 20. In the film, Snow discusses his initial reluctance to disclose his diagnosis due to the stigma surrounding mental health conditions.

“At the beginning I wanted to hide it, there’s so much prejudice,” he admits, highlighting the societal challenges faced by those with dementia.

Navigating the Diagnosis

Snow’s diagnosis was confirmed after a series of medical evaluations, including a mini-mental state exam and a brain scan.

His wife, epidemiologist Precious Lunga, revealed that Snow initially scored 29 out of 30 on the cognitive test, masking the underlying condition. “It was only later, when they did a brain scan, that we got a diagnosis,” she explained.

The journalist’s decision to go public with his diagnosis has been met with widespread support. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised Snow as “a true giant in journalism” and commended his efforts to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s. Michelle Dyson, chief executive of the Alzheimer’s Society, also lauded Snow’s courage, stating that his story will resonate with many affected by the condition.

A Legacy of Journalism

Throughout his illustrious career, Snow covered some of the most significant events of our time, from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the release of Nelson Mandela. His reporting from Somalia, Vietnam, and as ITN’s Washington correspondent during Ronald Reagan’s presidency cemented his reputation as a fearless and insightful journalist.

Snow’s contributions to journalism have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Bafta’s Richard Dimbleby Award for the best factual contribution to television in 2005 and the Bafta Fellowship in 2015. He also received 10 Royal Television Society awards, including six for presenter of the year.

Raising Awareness

In his new documentary, Snow travels to Zambia to uncover an environmental disaster, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to investigative journalism. The film not only highlights his professional prowess but also sheds light on his personal journey with Alzheimer’s.

Channel 4’s head of news, Louisa Compton, expressed the privilege of documenting Snow’s final investigation. “Jon Snow is not just one of Channel 4’s most recognisable faces – he is part of our very fabric and is dearly loved by viewers around the UK,” she said. The documentary aims to raise awareness about living with a life-changing diagnosis and the importance of early intervention.
