President Trump recently defended his decision to engage in conflict with Iran and the subsequent 60-day agreement that brought the fighting to a halt.

The Iran conflict has been a significant topic of discussion, with President Donald Trump recently addressing the media to defend his decisions regarding the war and the subsequent peace agreement. Speaking at the conclusion of his trip to France for the G7 summitTrump highlighted the achievements of the 60-day memorandum of understanding, claiming it accomplished all intended goals and more.
The president emphasized that the agreement aimed to end the current conflictreopen the Strait of Hormuzand prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He stressed that the deal ensures Iran cannot develop, buy, or possess a nuclear weapon, stating that this was the primary objective.
The Assassination of General Qassem Soleimani
Trump briefly shifted the conversation to the assassination of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps leader Gen. Qassem Soleimaniwhich occurred during his first term. He described Soleimani as a mad genius and credited the assassination with significantly impacting Iran’s capabilities.
Trump claimed that Soleimani’s death was one of the most significant events in the Middle East, comparing it to the comprehensive nuclear agreement that preceded his administration.
The president criticized former President Barack Obama for not taking similar actions against Soleimani. He also confused the 2015 nuclear agreement with a separate settlement regarding military equipment refunds, falsely claiming that Obama had loaded a plane with billions of dollars to bribe Iranian leaders. Trump asserted that this deal was a catastrophe and led to a path for Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.
The New Agreement with Iran
Trump then discussed the tentative deal between the U.S. and Iran, emphasizing that it does not provide Iran with any funds. He noted that the agreement is valid for 60 days, after which American forces could resume bombing if Iran fails to fulfill its terms. Despite this, he expressed hope that the agreement would hold and prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
As Trump spoke, a separate press conference call was held by U.S. officials who read out the agreement’s contents. Contrary to Trump’s claims, the agreement does provide Iran with significant funds through the sale of petroleum products and the release of frozen assets. It also includes a pledge for the U.S. to develop a plan for the reconstruction and economic development of Iran, as well as the termination of all sanctions against the country.
The president’s remarks were largely defensive, aiming to justify his actions and the agreement’s terms. The conflicting information presented by Trump and the U.S. officials highlighted the complexity and controversy surrounding the Iran conflict and the peace deal.
