Shaun Burton Named as Driver in Bedford Train Crash; 100 Injured

The tragic train collision near Bedford has claimed the life of a dedicated driver, identified as Shaun Burton. The incident, which occurred shortly after 5pm on Friday, has left the community in shock and has sparked a thorough investigation into the causes of the crash.

The collision involved two East Midlands Railway (EMR) trains, resulting in 100 injuries and significant disruption to rail services. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to piece together the events that led to this devastating incident.

The Victim: A Tribute to Shaun Burton

The British Transport Police (BTP) has named the driver who lost his life as Shaun Burton, a 60-year-old who was driving the EMR train that collided with another on the same line. Burton’s family has expressed their devastation, stating, “We are devastated by his loss.

Our thoughts are also with those affected by this incident.”

Dave Calfegeneral secretary of the train drivers’ union ASLEFpaid a heartfelt tribute to Burton, describing him as “dedicated to the job, and devoted to his colleagues and enormously popular at his depot.” Burton had joined the railway industry relatively late in life, having previously worked on buses and coaches before becoming a train driver seven years ago.

Investigation and Recovery Efforts

The investigation into the crash is being led by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB)with a focus on signal failures and the possibility of human error. Authorities are examining black box data from both trains, along with CCTV and signalling information, to determine the root cause of the collision.

Network Rail has described the crash as a “tragic, isolated incident” and has launched a major operation to minimize disruption. The recovery operation is expected to take several days, involving the removal of overhead wires and the construction of a temporary access road for cranes to lift the damaged trains and carriages from the line.

As of Saturday afternoon, nine people remained in a critical condition, with another 32 seriously injured and 57 suffering minor injuries. The disruption to rail services is expected to continue until 28 June, with no EMR services running between Bedford and London St Pancras during this period.

Impact on Rail Services and Passenger Advice

The crash has had a significant impact on rail services, with no services north of Luton on the busy commuter Thameslink line and no EMR services south of Bedford. A limited rail replacement bus service is running between Luton and Bedford, and passengers are urged to travel only if absolutely necessary.

From Monday, a limited service will begin to run north from London St Pancras as far as Luton. However, there will be no services north of Luton on the Thameslink line, and Luton Airport Express services have been cancelled with a rail replacement bus operating between Luton Airport and Luton.

Passengers are advised to check live travel updates before travelling, as journey planning apps and websites are being updated to reflect the changes to the timetable. Network Rail has assured that train operators will accept tickets for affected EMR customers on any alternative route.

Community Response and Support

The community in Bedford has shown immense kindness and support to those affected by the crash. Local residents have been providing food and water to stranded passengers, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity in the face of adversity.

The chief constable of British Transport Police, Lucy D’Orsihas praised the community for their support, stating that people in Bedfordshire have shown “immense kindness to those stranded on trains and casualties.” This outpouring of support highlights the resilience and compassion of the local community during this difficult time.
