From the highly anticipated Clyde and Western Open Shore Sweepstake to the Junior Shore Championships there’s plenty to look forward to. The Clyde and Western Open Shore Sweepstake and Junior Shore Championships
The Clyde and Western Open Shore Sweepstake and Junior Shore Championships are set to take place on Sunday, August 16 at the Greenock Esplanade. Registration opens at 08.30 and closes at 10.30 with fishing activities running from 11.00 to 16.00.
The competition follows catch and return rules, with a minimum fish size of 18cm and a limit of three hooks. To participate, contact Billy Buckley a Scottish international, at 07732 741285. Entry fees are set at £15 with juniors fishing for free when accompanied by an adult. An optional £5 fee is available for the longest fish pool. This event is also recognized for the Angling Trust Sea League.
Recent Fishing Results and Venue Updates
In the latest leg of the Bass Rock Shore Angling League’s Summer SeriesAlan Brown from West Barns emerged victorious with two fish measuring 63cm. He narrowly beat David Fairbairn from Haddington, who also caught two fish but measured 46cm. Stewart Fairbairn from Haddington secured third place with two fish at 39cm while his son, Callum aged ten, impressed with a single flounder of 29cm. Niko Millar Jun from North Berwick rounded out the top five with a fish just one centimeter shorter.
The next round of the series is scheduled for Wednesday, August 5 with the venue to be decided. Meanwhile, a new picnic area has been created at Allandale Tarn near West Calder. Iona Allan, the owner, described the effort as hard graft to clear plants and trees, digging down to a good level. The area is set to re-open with cooling temperatures.
Other venues have seen mixed fortunes. Bowden Springs near Linlithgow has remained open with anglers catching fish, while Pottishaw near Whitburn reports that the hot weather has affected fishing. Morton Fishings is set to re-open on Saturday, August 1 at 8am. The Lake of Menteith has been fishing its socks off recently, with most boats into double-figures using a floating line and lures or dry flies at the head of the wind. The limit on catch and release has been lifted, and some nice stockies were introduced to the lake this week from their own pens.
Coarse Fishing Updates
The Edinburgh and Lothians Coarse Angling Club hosted Match Day 6 of their Summer League at the Match Pond in Drumtassie near Blackridge. Despite poor weather conditions, including showery spells and moderate winds, anglers persevered. Alex Kerr emerged with the best bag of 17lb 5oz followed by Darrin Ferguson with 16lb 6oz and Stewart Ritchie with 15lb. In Section B, Shug Smith won with 12lb 5oz and in Section C, Bartek Kozlowski topped the standings with 12lb 6oz.
After the weigh-in, the club updated their leader board. Darrin Ferguson the club president, holds pole position with 27 points and a total weight of 106lb 4oz. Stewart Ritchie is second with 67lb 8oz and Shug Smith is third with 85lb 7oz. Ferguson also had a good day Other matches in the round include Joshua Lloyd vs. Smith and Andrew H Paterson vs. Bruce Lawrie to be completed on Saturday, August 8.
Elsewhere, the second round of the Strathclyde Park Evening Series faced weed problems but proved successful with anglers catching fish. Graham McOwat took full advantage of an end peg towards the sluice to weigh 2kg 735g and take the win. Gus Brindle the organizer, leads the chase for the title with Andrew Potts second and Colin McKerrell third. McOwat continued his good form by winning the final round of the SFCA Canal Series on the Forth and Clyde Canal at Dullatur hooking into a weight of 1kg 915g in heavy rain.
