Maltese

These hardy little dogs, although hunters in days gone by, have an affinity towards cats as well as other dogs. This breed is graceful, cute and loves nothing more then to be a lap dog to his owner.

The Maltese is a smart little dog who can be easily trained not to chase cats. They even tend to join in at play time with them if there are no other dogs in the vicinity to have a romp with.

The Maltese dog does not normally reach over 4 kilos. Therefore, the cat might even end up being larger than the dog.

Shih Tzu

Under all that luxurious hair, there really is a dog. Shih Tzus are by no means wall flowers, but they are docile and quick to learn. They respond to metered discipline and learning. Too much discipline turns this dog into an angry, skittish dog, which is not good for anyone. Characteristically their easy-going nature makes them a good choice to introduce to a cat.

Cavalier King Charles spaniel

The cavalier king Charles, also known as the "cav" is another breed that seems to be drawn to smaller animals. In fact, if they are introduced to the cat as a puppy, they will even bow down to them as the head of the house. Make sure that the cat is not prone to taking this too far, thus bullying the puppy.

Bichon frise

Who can resist this adorable dog? Cats can’t seem to. They make great partners, often becoming best friends along the way. Bichons are docile and easily trained to tolerate just about anything.

Golden retriever

Of course, the golden dog had to be one of the top five. There are not many living creatures which can’t get along with a golden retriever. Just remember that the golden is a retriever and that these breeds are brilliant at hunting small game. Keep a watchful eye over your retriever if you have a tiny kitten.
