Discover a practitioner-led MSc that combines theory, applied observation and accredited stage 1 training in sport and exercise psychology

The MSc in sport and exercise psychology provides a comprehensive bridge between academic theory and real-world practice. Designed and taught by a team of practitioner-academics, the programme emphasises applied learning: you will review current theory, observe interventions in live sporting environments and practise delivery methods used by professional support teams.
The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society and fulfils stage 1 training requirements for those seeking a career as a sport and exercise psychologist.
This degree is delivered in a flexible format that accommodates full-time and part-time students.
Weekly asynchronous sessions are hosted on Blackboard, allowing you to engage with lectures at times that suit your schedule, while intensive on-campus blocks provide concentrated opportunities for hands-on teaching and peer collaboration. The programme also includes chances to observe applied work with national governing bodies and elite teams, enhancing employability and practical competence.
Curriculum and core modules
The curriculum combines theoretical breadth with applied depth. Key modules include Contemporary Issues in Sport Psychology, which examines social and lifespan influences on athletes and emerging mental health concerns, and Professional Practice in Sports Psychology, which explores the consultancy process and the philosophical assumptions underpinning service delivery. The Psychological Skills module focuses on skill acquisition and performance strategies, while Exercise Psychology links behaviour-change theory to physical activity promotion. Each module integrates critical appraisal, case-based learning and practical exercises to prepare you for professional environments.
Research training and dissertation
A substantial element of the degree is methodological training. Through Conducting and Evaluating Psychological Research you will develop competencies in study design, data analysis and critical literature review, enabling you to plan and execute an original research project. The Dissertation in Psychology is an extended independent study, supervised by a member of staff, that demands sustained inquiry and rigorous reporting. Together these elements equip you with the skills to both evaluate evidence and contribute new knowledge to the field.
Assessment, learning approach and facilities
Assessment methods mirror the tasks you will perform as a practitioner and researcher: expect case studies, reflective portfolios, psycho-educational workshops, role plays and empirical reports. The blended learning model blends online, asynchronous content with periodic three-day on-campus teaching blocks every six weeks, supporting learners who balance work and study. You will have access to university resources, specialist facilities and a virtual learning environment that supports collaborative learning and independent study.
Teaching team and industry connections
The teaching team are research-active professionals who publish in leading journals and maintain active client work with athletes and vulnerable populations. The programme benefits from strong external links: students can observe practice with organisations such as Bristol Bears Rugby, England Surfing, Bristol Rovers FC and Western Storm Cricket, as well as through UWE Bristol’s Centre for Sport. These partnerships provide authentic observation opportunities and networking routes into placements and employment.
Entry criteria, accreditation and career pathways
Applicants should hold at least a lower second-class honours degree in Psychology or a relevant subject, or possess equivalent qualifications approved by the course leader. To progress from this MSc to Stage 2 training and ultimately achieve chartered status, applicants must have Graduate Basis for Chartered membership (GBC). Graduates without GBC who hold sport and exercise science degrees may be eligible for the Sport and Exercise Psychology Accreditation Route (SEPAR) through BASES. Those with GBC can pursue the Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP) for Stage 2 progression; both pathways can support registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
International applicants will need appropriate English language evidence—typically an overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component—or an approved equivalent. Pre-sessional English programmes are available for students who meet academic requirements but need extra language preparation. The course accepts deferrals and offers many modules as standalone CPD options for professionals seeking targeted development.
Careers support and next steps
Graduates leave with knowledge suited to multiple roles: clinical support to athletes, enhanced coaching practice, research and public health roles promoting activity, or further training toward professional chartership. The university’s careers service offers tailored coaching, vacancy listings for internships and placements, and employer engagement events to help you transition into the workforce. For details about postgraduate progression routes, see the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology or BASES guidance on Stage 2 training.
