Wizz Air announces nine new routes and base at Cardiff Airport

Wizz Air has announcedthat it will have a new permanent base at Cardiff Airport and provide flights to destinations across Europe and Egypt.

Wizz Air, a European ultra-low-cost airline based in Budapest has announced its new routes. The budget airline will have a new permanent base at Cardiff Airport and provide flights to destinations across Europe and North Africa.

Wizz Air Announces New Routes

As Wizz Air is bringing in nine new routes to Cardiff, 40 jobs are being created in a much-needed boost for the airport. The new locations include resorts such as Alicante, Faro, and Tenerife, as well as seasonal routes to Corfu and Palma de Mallorca as well as Lanzarote and Sharm El Sheikh during the winter.

Wales Transport Minister Ken Skates said: “This is a positive step for the airport to emerge from the impact of Covid-19.” The airline said the move will also create 250 further jobs in the supply chain. The airline added Gatwick, Doncaster and Sheffield to its UK network last month and is now operating from 11 UK airports, including Luton and Birmingham.

Managing Director Owain Jones said, “This (move to Cardiff) reflects Wizz Air’s continued commitment to serving the UK market and generating economic growth, as we create local jobs, stimulate the tourism and hospitality industries and deliver on our promise of providing affordable, direct flights to exciting holiday destinations.

Spencer Birns, Cardiff Airport’s interim chief executive, said the new arrival was “fantastic news for Wales“.

He added, “We know many people living in Wales are craving a well-deserved holiday after such a challenging year and these new flights will give so many more opportunities for holidays to be planned now that will give us all something to look forward to for next year.”
