World Supersport rider Luca Scassa will be debuting in MotoGP for the first time during the Aragon GP next week when he will replace injured Karel Abraham in the Cardion AB Motoracing team.
Abraham has been forced to skip the rest of the the 2013 MotoGP World Championship season due to a lingering shoulder injury that he sustained in Indianapolis, and now requires surgery.
The 30-year-old Scassa has previously competed in World Superbike and British Superbike Championships and is back racing again in World Supersport championship after picking up a ride with Intermoto Kawasaki this year.
Scassa is currently sixth in the standings with just two rounds left in the Supersport series, and while the Aragon round – where the Italian finished the WSS in third – is scheduled to be a one off event, but if he does well he could be called on to finish the season with the Czech team.
“Luca has ridden more than fifty races in WSBK and he has enough experiences to run on the MotoGP bike and to jump to the championship,” said team owner Karel Abraham Sr.
“It was important for us to find a rider, who can manage so specific a machine as the MotoGP bike is and who knows the circuits where next five races will take place.
The first race waiting for us is next weekend in Aragon, where Luca achieved this year´s best result in WSS.
Our aim is to get Luca feel comfortable with the bike and try to improve the lap time step by step during the weekend.
Then we will decide if we will continue together also in remaining races.
