After winning the red flagged Moto2 race at Jerez, Pol Espargaro decided to put his name on top of the timesheets in this morning’s first free practice.
The Pons rider pipped his fellow countryman Marc Marquez – who dominated most of the session- in the dying seconds with a flying lap of 1’43″447, leaving the Marquez 0.
171s adrift, in what turned out to be a tight session with thirteen riders within a second.
Marc VDS Racing Team duo Scott Redding and Mika Kallio were 3rd and fourth respectively on their Kalex machines, while last year’s 125cc runner-up Johann Zarco put his MotoBI/TSR into 5th.
Thomas Luthi took 6th followed by Xavier Simeon on the Tech3 Mistral and Toni Elias is finally looking more like himself as he grabbed the 8th position.
Alex de Angelis is finally coming to grips with his Forward Racing’s Suter with his ninth spot, while Julian Simon closed out the top ten with his Avintia branded Suter.
Gino Rea had a big one off at the Ayrton Senna corner that will force his Gresini mechanics to work overtime ahead of this afternoon’s second practice session.
