Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has highlighted Callum McGregor’s potential to become a manager, following summer discussions about the captain’s future.
The future of Celtic captain Callum McGregor has been a topic of much speculation. Current manager Martin O’Neill has publicly endorsed McGregor’s potential to transition into a managerial role, following discussions with the club’s chief executive Michael Nicholson.
Rumors about McGregor’s future have intensified since he switched agents in June with links to the Saudi Arabian Pro League where former Celtic coaches Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou currently work.
Despite these rumors, McGregor has expressed his contentment at Celtic Park.
McGregor’s managerial potential
O’Neill revealed that McGregor had a constructive conversation with Nicholson, emphasizing the player’s value and potential within the club. “He had a good conversation with Michael, the CEO,” O’Neill explained.
“It didn’t need reiterating what we think of him here, his potential, and what he can do.”
The manager also suggested that McGregor should start considering coaching badges, indicating a clear pathway for the academy graduate within Celtic. With a couple of years left on his contract, McGregor has reportedly expressed his desire to stay.
O’Neill confirmed, “That’s what he said to me. He’s happy.”
When asked about McGregor’s potential as a manager, O’Neill was optimistic. “That is extremely possible. It’s too early for him to think about that, but he’s definitely managerial material,” he stated. O’Neill drew parallels with other players who have successfully transitioned into management, highlighting McGregor’s strategic mindset.

O’Neill praised McGregor’s understanding of positional play a tactical approach that has become increasingly important in modern football. “He’s very into this positional play,” O’Neill said. “I’m learning it now, I didn’t think I had to! It’s necessary now to talk this language. The jumping, the low block, transitions – whoever started it off probably didn’t know what it meant!”
