Scotland's rugby team is set to face the Springboks in Pretoria next weekend, following a thrilling victory over Argentina in Cordoba.

The Scotland rugby team is gearing up for what promises to be their toughest challenge yet. After a thrilling 47-38 victory over Argentina in Cordoba, the team is now setting their sights on the Springboks in Pretoria next weekend.
Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu has described the upcoming match as “the biggest test in world rugby right now.”
The victory in Cordoba was a significant milestone for the team, especially considering they were missing key players like Finn RussellBlair Kinghorn and Huw Jones.
Despite these absences, the team managed to put on a stellar performance, with standout contributions from Rory Hutchinson and Kyle Rowe.
The Journey to Pretoria
Scotland’s journey to Pretoria is not just a physical one but also a mental and strategic challenge.
The team is aware that facing the Springboks on their home turf is a daunting task. Tuipulotu acknowledged that the challenge will be “another step up in difficulty,” but one that the team is eager to embrace.
“Next week will be a different challenge in terms of how South Africa defend,” said Tuipulotu. “We know that will be another step up. To be honest, I didn’t see their game against England. We know the challenge goes up a few gears next week. Playing South Africa on their own patch is pretty much the biggest challenge in world rugby right now.”
The Springboks, being back-to-back world champions, present a unique set of challenges. Tuipulotu emphasized the excitement within the team, stating, “It’s a unique challenge but one we are really excited for.” The team’s confidence is high following their impressive showing in Argentina, but they are fully aware that the match against South Africa will be a different animal.
Lessons from the Past
The team’s recent history with Argentina has been a significant learning experience. In November, Scotland let a 21-0 lead slip away, resulting in a painful defeat. However, Tuipulotu views this as a “landmark” for the team, highlighting the lessons they have learned from that experience.
“Yeah, we addressed it,” Tuipulotu said. “We had to, there was no point hiding from it or pretending it didn’t happen. It was a painful experience, but I also feel it was a bit of a landmark for this team in terms of what we learned.”
The victory in Cordoba was particularly satisfying given the team’s resilience and the quality of their performance. Tuipulotu emphasized the importance of matching Argentina’s passion, which they did successfully. The team’s fluidity in attack and the standout performances from players like Hutchinson and Rowe were key factors in their victory.
The Road Ahead
As the team prepares to face the Springboks, they are drawing on the lessons from their past experiences. Coach Gregor Townsend has been instrumental in shaping the team’s character, even expressing gratitude for their November defeat against Argentina. “Now looking back, we’re very grateful for that defeat [in November],” Townsend said. “It was really painful at the time, to be in a winning position and then to disappoint your own crowd. But the week after, I felt that we became a much better team, we had more honest conversations and then during the Six Nations we were more prepared for momentum swings in the game.”
The team’s performance in Cordoba was a testament to their growth and resilience. They began the match by conceding an early try to Joaquin Oviedo but quickly reasserted themselves, scoring tries in the first half through Tuipulotu, Pierre Schoeman, and Hutchinson to lead 19-10 at the turn. Despite Argentina’s strong start to the second half, the Scots maintained their composure and scored further tries to secure a commanding lead.
Looking ahead, the team is focused on continuing their momentum. The injury to prop Elliot Millar Mills is a concern, but the team remains determined to face the Springboks with the same intensity and passion they displayed in Cordoba. As they prepare to fly to South Africa immediately after the Argentina game, the excitement and anticipation within the team are palpable.
